Why are triangles bad?

I just started learning low poly modeling. I'm completely new to it, and all I know is that quads are good, ngons are bad, and triangles are not preferable. I can get my head around why ngons are bad - I auto-triangulated one mesh with ngons and it turned out bad. Quads are good for loop cuts and easy to split into triangles, but what's wrong with triangles, especially since if you want to put a model into a game engine, it will be triangulated anyway? As I said, I'm just a beginner, so I'm open to any advice on topology or other stuff I might miss.
