Dog Food Suggestion For Severe Celiac & Allergy
I’ve read in multiple places, grain-free diets are not acceptable for the cardiovascular health of a dog. So before you fill this thread with that- please read what I’m about to say!
I have a severe gluten allergy where even minor cross contamination makes my brain swell causes neurological problems as well as swelling in my face and even gives me extremely horrific GI issues. I still don’t want to miss out on the enjoyment of having a pet and something that loves me.
It is very difficult to find a dog food with no Wheat, Barley, or Rye that still has grains to support a dogs health.
I recently got a puppy and I want to ensure I’m providing him a proper diet. Three days ago (we got him 2 1/2 weeks ago) I noticed I just could not take the cross contamination any longer, the constant nausea and dry heaving at random moments, my body rejecting food due to the constant contamination and trying to protect itself. It’s not as simple as washing your hands or telling your puppy no from licking your face. It’s on their chew toys, reaching in their mouth for wood chips or plastic they somehow fathom into existence, and many other things other than just mixing their food and putting it in a plastic container.
What we fed him previously:
-Purina Pro Plan (Puppy) Sensitive Stomach DRY Food (contains gluten)
-Purina Pro Plan (Puppy) Sensitive Stomach WET (no gluten)
What we are changing to:
**-**Merrick Backcountry Raw Infused Grain-Free Puppy Recipe Freeze (DRY)
-Purina Pro Plan (Puppy) Sensitive Stomach WET
What am I worried about/what am I wanting help with from writing this? Simply- what is the point of all of this?
1.) There are only 5 brands of dog-food that are recognized and recommended by the WSAVA. None of them have a gluten free/grain free puppy food.
2.) Because of #1- I want to ensure my dog isn’t eating junk and I’m not being swindled by stupid marketing schemes as I work in marketing myself. I’ve heard blue buffalo in some forums and reviews is like feeding your dog junk food.
3.) I want my dog to have grain in its diet- not gluten containing grain. Especially with cardiovascular risks and development.
What are my questions?:
1.) What is a good grain-free puppy food and eventually adult grain-free food? Especially since there are no gluten free dry foods.
2.) If I feed my dog grain-free dry kibble, and add in wet food on a daily basis that contains non-gluten grains (rice, oats) will this still be helpful?
I know I’m over thinking this a bit, as I could simply feed my dog food from Walmart (no shame), but with having to monitor my own health and diet with a bad allergy and being health conscious myself- I want to ensure my dog is healthy enough to stay active with me in my very active lifestyle as well and stay healthy and is getting the vitamins and nourishment his body is bred to receive since I have to be selfish and have a gluten free environment due to my severity. I want to ensure my lifestyle and allergies don’t affect his LIFE, so he can live long and be happy! (:
