As a neurotypical, I’ve come to realise the difficulty in knowing when I’m talking to a neurodivergent on social media.
Someone I haven’t met IRL, may seem very “typical” online, because words alone can’t translate someone’s expressions or mannerisms, especially when they’re neurodivergent.
So once I realise they are on the spectrum, my perception of them completely changes. I can’t help it, but my approach to our conversation becomes different. What I thought was a strange or odd response to my comment, would automatically make sense to me when I realised the person I’m talking to is neurodivergent.
And I want to be honest with this topic, but I automatically infantilise the person’s involvement in the conversation, simply because I don’t think most neurodivergent people are willing to understand typical norms in a conversation or topic.
