Nitin “Nathan” Sarangapani was born in India on Sept. 25, 1981, to Alpana Bezbaruah Sarangapani and Ramgopal Sarangapani, and later made his home in Houston, Texas. A 2000 graduate of Klein Forest High School, he studied in New Zealand for two years after graduation before returning to the United States, where he joined the U.S. Marine Reserve while continuing his education at Sam Houston State University and Tomball College. Friends and family remembered him as hardworking, energetic and deeply committed to serving his adopted country. Sarangapani died on his 24th birthday, Sept. 25, 2005, after he was shot outside the Champions-area home of Hardeep Grewal, the father of the woman he had been dating; he was flown to Memorial Hermann by LifeFlight but died early that morning. Grewal was later indicted for murder, but a Harris County jury found him not guilty in 2008 after his defense argued that he acted in self-defense during a dark, post-Hurricane Rita power outage, while prosecutors and Sarangapani’s family maintained that the shooting was unjustified.
