My Jorgensen flat spokeshave was just delivered, and wanted to give it a quick test drive to see how it is. I only spent about 2 minutes with it, no sharpening, just adjusting the blade and seeing how it does out of the box.
The fit and finish are high quality at first glance. No overspray on paint, everything seems machined well and screws moved nicely. Blade was ground well. The wooden handles are slightly narrower than I would have guessed, but not negatively so. The blade sits well in a machined slot in the bed. Not a lot of side to side motion, but enough to make sure you can adjust the blade laterally as needed. The sole was machined well, seems flat though haven't taken any machinist squares to it yet. The blade is nice and thick and wasn't super sharp out of the box which is to be expected for budget tools like this. It did do well making some curls in walnut. Once the blade is sharpened, it'll really be impressive.
Overall I'm really impressed in the 2 minutes of use. I already have a few vintage and modern spokeshaves and think this will probably be a top user. Time will tell!
