Hello,

I am an American who has interest in cultural and historical fashion. Both moms and dads side of the family came to the USA back in the 1800s. We don't know the exact regions of familial lineage as only rumors have survived.

Mom's side of the family is from Lower Saxony and dads is from Mecklenburg (I don't know what exact county). I also really like the black forest trachten and want to also make one.

Do you know of online resources (it can be in German or English as I know people who can translate) for sewing patterns and information on the regional trachten variations? What about online people/resources/forums?

Thanks in advance

(PS. This was removed in r/askagerman most likely due to account age)

The knitted beads and the center heart embroidered pendant were made by Ukrainian artists -- the pendant was a brooch and the beads were a bracelet, reused to make this necklace. The center fabric was a sample I received from a Ukrainian Etsy clothing seller.

This choker took over 7 hours to make. The instructions will have to be posted bit by bit since I don't necessarily have the time to post it all at once.

  1. measure neck + few inches. 2 strands of 1 inch ribbons plus interfacing of the same length of the neck + few inches and height.

  2. cut an accent ribbon for the middle section a few inches longer than the base ribbons.

  3. sew ends of accent ribbon under your outside facing ribbon.

  4. sew the accent ribbon to the front facing body ribbon. If you want, use beads by stringing them on the thread and tacking the line down every so often.

  5. sew on accent cloth to front ribbon

  6. sandwich any back flowing ribbons and interfacing between back and front ribbons, sew together at boarders.

  7. add decoration like brooches, pendants in whatever order you want

  8. sew on clasps. I used sew on snapping clasps (I don't know the real name. The extra few inches are for these clasps plus because the base "shrinks" when put together. I recommend re-measuring and adjusting length throughout the entire process

Hello everyone,

I have a fascination with historical and cultural clothing. I have been finding bits and pieces of English-translated information concerning Ukrainian traditional clothing over the years. My Ukrainian clothing interest all started with my restoration project of an antique vyshyvanka from the borodyanka region right after the invasion. So far, it is my favorite (shhh! Don't tell the rest of the world!!!).

Something I haven't really found a lot of information on is the ochipok.

Looking through various old paintings, images, etc. it seems like the design is heavily based on the region. Some of the ochipok look akin to some styles of modern scrub caps, but with fancier decoration, pleating, and natural materials. Others look like 'kufi' or 'tam' styled caps.

My question is: what makes an ochipok an ochipok? To me the approximate definition seems to be akim to an under scarf shaper but with cultural context (like a boubou for tichels). Construction variations exist, so what 'shape' would constitute as an Ochipok?

I would like to find some ochipok sewing patterns, but I don't speak Ukrainian. It is very hard to find specific information besides visual references when you are illiterate in Ukrainian.
