- Pics 1 & 2 are the spiders I’m looking to identify.
- Pics 3 & 4 of are what looked like egg sacs nearby the spiders in the first pics.
- Pics 4 & 5 are of the female brown widow I found earlier in the day.
A few days ago I noticed at least four or five spiders, all fairly close together, that had built some messy looking webs in the nooks of our patio cover ceiling. Based on their location, along with the appearance of their web and body, I figured they were cellar spiders and let them be. They all looked like the spider shown in pics 1 & 2.
Yesterday, I found a female brown widow under one of our patio tables (see pics 4 & 5). The table she was on is only a few feet from where our door with all the “cellar spiders” is. I was able to safely remove the female, but now I’m wondering if the spiders by our door (pics 1 & 2) are actually male brown widows and not cellar spiders.
They have a much smaller body than the female I found, but longer legs. I haven’t been able to see the underside of their abdomen to look for any hourglass, but they do have some markings on the back.
Regarding the possible “egg sacs.” There were a handful of them scattered throughout the nooks of our patio cover ceiling, though most were nearby the webs. When I touched the “sacs” with a stick, most flattened immediately and were pretty flaky, so I just scraped them off into a ziploc bag. None of them looked clearly like the spiky egg sac style I’m seeing online for brown widows.
Since the unknown spiders are so close to our door, we are getting rid of all the spiders along with the webs/suspected egg sacs to be safe. But I wanted to seek this subreddits opinion so I know how to better identify them moving forward.
Thanks!
Sorry for the poor lighting. Is this a brown recluse? I’m used to seeing wolf spiders in this garage.
Found in boat house in Tallahassee Florida :3
One of my coworkers was complaining about a spider so I offered to move it, but they said it was in the traps so I wanted to confirm this is what I thought it was.
Edit: adding that I do hate glue traps and have been (unsuccessfully) advocating for getting rid of them.
I’m probably gonna keep it. It’s won my heart already. I’m on my fourth jumping spider (californicus juvenile/subadult possibly) and I just got my first tarantula not too long ago (Mexican red rump juvenile). I found this little speed racer on my counter in search of food. We live near silverwood and deep creek in SoCal Mojave Desert.
My jumper was actually in a similar predicament only it was found on top of a friend’s air fryer instead. My rule of thumb is if it’s outside admire it, maybe handle if it shows no stress or aggression, and then go your merry way. But if it’s in the house and it takes to food I usually keep it as a pet. This lil dude is like the size of a large thumbnail. I’m hoping it’s a juvenile so I can have it for at least six months but I’m not too sure the stage it’s at.
I knew a little bit about wolf spiders and was titter tottering on getting a velvet or wolf spider next for the collection and I guess God said here’s a wolf spider enjoy xD Obviously the enclosure is for sure temporary, lil dude will for sure need like a five gallon tank maybe something smaller not super sure yet. I need a little help with ID. It looks like a schizocosa but it also looks like it could be hogna.
Wife just sent me this picture. Please help identify cause she's trying to convince me to burn the yard down!! 🤣
This little guy crawled onto me while I was gardening. These are screenshots from a video, so sorry if they're blurry. I set her back into a flower in my garden and she immediately started building a web. She looks kinda.... widow like.. please tell me I'm wrong hahaha! She was very gentle and polite, whatever she was.
Smaller than a dime. Friend or foe?
Need help identifying this spider. I believe it is a widow of some kind. Located in Houston, Texas.
