With almost 100 percent sunny days in the summer, Amarillo has something to offer for everyone!
Music lovers? Concerts every Thursday night at the Amarillo Botanical Gardens, starting June 4. A growing slate of concerts at The Lumberyard in Canyon, including Aaron Watson. The Bellamy Brothers and Gene Watson at the Amarillo Civic Center. Plus all of the impromptu music at the 806, 6^(th) Street, and Drunken Oyster.
Comedy? How about George Lopez and Jerry Seinfeld making an Amarillo appearance at the Civic Center?
Sports? Catch future MLB stars at Hodgetown all summer long. Amarillo is one of only 30 cities in the US with an MLB affiliated AA team. Or take in an arena football game, courtesy of the Amarillo War Birds. If you are a golf fan, you won’t want to miss seeing future PGA golf stars at the Occunet Korn Ferry Open at Tascosa Golf Club.
Restaurants? More barbeque places than you can count. Local and franchise steak houses. Tex-Mex, authentic. Korean, Chinese, Thai, and Japanese. And soon a Brazilian Steak House on Hillside! And don’t forget the Canyon offerings! Mickey’s on the square, Buff’s, and Pondeseta, with the roaring of the trains flying by your table!
Golf or tennis? Amarillo has 72 holes of some of the best public golf in the state of Texas, and very affordable! If you are into tennis, we have extremely nice tennis centers at Austin Park, John Stiff Park, and Memorial Park. And there is an indoor center at John Stiff! Pickleball? Check out any of these locations – there are courts!
There will also be volleyball, softball, and basketball leagues this summer for adults!
History buffs? Take a tour of historic homes in Amarillo. Go through the several-hour tour of the Harrington House. See a mini-photo museum in the old federal building downtown. Check out the Amarillo Museum of Art, which will have a Route 66 exhibit this summer. Tour the Barfiled Building. Walk in and check out the Potter County Courthouse (old Santa Fe Building).
Kids in sports? There will be camps for football, golf, tennis, volleyball, and basketball all summer. West Texas A&M will be hosting throughout, as well as local clubs.
Other interests for kids? Band, orchestra, and choir) and art camps at WT and AC, as well as several local churches offering these. Kids will also love the water parks at Thompson Park or Canyon!
Family fun? How about a night at the refreshed Wonderland Park? Passes now include all rides. If it’s too hot out, head to Cinergy or Western Bowl. Go to Palo Duro Canyon for a day and wrap it up with barbeque and the TEXAS musical drama. Drive to Canadian and picnic at Lake Marvin. Take in a movie at their theater. You’ll swear you’re not in the Texas panhandle. If you really want to play tourist, head to the Big Texan with the family. Yes, it’s a tourist trap, and a super cool one!
