Bought a 4.5" PDP SF as a USPSA CO gun last year, immediately wanted to replace the slick OEM grips.
I saw pictures of these weird things floating around on reddit. At the time Mag Mo was taking all requests via email, now I think he has an online storefront. They also used to be advertised as the EDGE grips, but now it looks like they're just listed as "MAG-MO grips?" idk.
I sent him a picture of my hands on the OEM grip and described what I wanted. The grip was made custom to my specifications.
Mag Mo was chill to work with, very responsive to my questions and requests. The Arasaka lettering was a custom request too; I just sent him a PNG of the logo and he added it to the base of the grip.
Thoughts
I fucking love these things man.
They are fantastically grippy, even on a hot day with sweaty palms your hands just stay glued to the gun. I got the coarser grit and I found it perfect. I have very calloused hands so YMMV but I like the texture way better than the finer grit of something like Talon grips. The only place I need chalk now is on the back of my firing hand fingers.
The quirk of these grips is of course the ledge on only one side for your support palm. It works exactly as advertised, giving your support hand the the feel of a big palm swell without increasing trigger reach or grip diameter for your firing hand.
As weird as it looks it doesn't feel unnatural at all when shooting; during rapid doubles and long strings of fire your hands stay locked right in. Even when doing weak hand shooting you barely notice the asymmetry.
(Another incidental benefit of the support side ledge is that it actually helps you out a little on table starts by letting you get your fingertips under the gun).
V.S. LOK grip Bogies
When I was competing with a Beretta 92 and slim LOK veloce grips I developed really bad trigger finger/stenosing tenosynovitis in my support hand index finger. Something about the shape and angle of the palm ledge on the Mag Mo grips lets me crush tight with my support hand without exacerbating my hand pain.
I briefly tried to switch to standard profile LOK bogies for the PDP and within dry fire plus 2 matches my hand pain returned. The grip texture on the bogies is also just okay, not really aggressive enough for shooting competitions with sweaty palms unless you chalk up often.
I have since switched back to the Mag Mo grips and my trigger finger symptoms are already improving.
Whining
The negatives are very minor and mostly subjective.
- Hump profile is slightly shallower than OEM. Not a huge deal, and the difference isn't enough to hurt your index when swapping grips, but I really like the contour of the OEM hump and I wish it was identical.
- Firing hand profile. The thickness of the grip on the firing hand side is very similar to the OEM, but while the OEM has a slight curve to it, the Mag Mo is completely flat. A gentle curve would create a more even pressure around the firing hand. He offers a palm swell option, but that would increase the grip diameter.
- Wear on the silicon carbide. The grips are still extremely grippy after 5k rounds but there is a slight but noticeable difference in texture between worn and unworn areas of the grip even after cleaning.
- Logo placement. I don't mind a subtle logo but "EDGE" in big letters on the firing hand side is a liiiittle tacky. I would have preferred the custom lettering in that spot since it faces out when the gun is holstered.
Since these grips are resin printed some of these things may be easy fixes, but idk.
.
Tl;dr: grips rule, just try em.
