What is your view on education system in Singapore?

Note: This post is just for discussion and to broaden my perspective on the Singapore education system. It’s not meant to be hateful or offensive in any way.

Recently, I had a debate with a colleague about Singapore’s education system.

For context, I didn’t grow up in Singapore, but I have 2 children here where one is in J2 and the other is in Sec 3, both in the IP stream. Because of that, I’ve generally had quite a positive impression of the system since they’ve followed what many people see as the “optimal” academic route.

On the other hand, my colleague has a child who is struggling in primary school, and he feels that Singapore’s education system is one of the worst in the world. Personally, I disagree, but I can still understand where some of his frustrations come from.

Some of my thoughts on the system:

Positives

1. Streaming (G1/G2/G3) – I know this is controversial, but I do think streaming has its benefits since students learn at different paces. However, deciding this at such a young age and the long-term impact it can have is definitely debatable.

2. Different tertiary pathways – I like that there are multiple routes such as JC, Poly and ITE for students with different strengths and goals.

3. Efforts to reduce stress – Changes like moving from L1R5 to L1R4 and reducing A-Level RP from 90 to 70 seem like attempts to make the system slightly less intense.

Neutral

1. More advanced curriculum – Compared to some systems overseas (e.g. IGCSEs), Singapore’s exams and curriculum seem noticeably harder and more rigorous.

Negatives

1. Very stressful environment – The pressure here can be extremely intense for students.

2. Stereotypes around certain pathways – Students who are placed into routes that are traditionally viewed as “weaker” often face stigma, and it can feel difficult to change the direction of their academic journey later on.

Curious to hear what others think about the system especially people who have experienced different pathways themselves.

Edit: used to AI as my eng is not the best
