Hi everyone,
I’m a Year 12 student trying to decide between the University of Melbourne and Monash University for Commerce, planning to major in finance.

I’ve read a lot of comparisons already, but I’m still unsure because most of them focus on rankings or commuting distance. I do care about prestige, but it’s not my main factor. Distance is not a factor.

I’ve also noticed that a lot of people tend to choose Monash because of the double degree options, but I’m not really interested in doing a double degree. I’m still deciding between Monash and UniMelb purely for a single Commerce degree.

What I’m really trying to understand is the difficulty of the course and how manageable it is day-to-day.

I’m okay with working hard, but I don’t want to feel overwhelmed all the time, especially with math-heavy subjects.

From what I’ve heard:
- UniMelb is more theoretical and possibly more challenging
- Monash is more structured and manageable

But I’m not sure how true that actually is in practice.

So I’d really appreciate insight from current students or grads:

  1. How difficult is the Commerce (finance) content at each uni?

  2. Would you say one is noticeably more math-heavy or conceptually harder than the other?

  3. How manageable is the weekly workload at each uni?

  4. What are the assignments and exams like at each uni?

  5. If you’ve experienced both (or know people who have), what’s the biggest difference in difficulty?

I’m mainly trying to choose a program where I can do well without being constantly stressed.

Thanks!
