I finished it!

I wanted my first project to follow the stars - and to whoever understand what I mean and recognises it, you'll know how much this little piece means to me 🥰

It's a lighthouse from a very emotional videogame called "to the moon" that holds a lot of memories for me but isn't very well known

Just being able to make something like this really warms my heart and I can't wait to make more

My first finished project!

I followed a little workshop in whittling where I learnt the basics and this is the result of it! What an incredible new hobby!

Any tips on how I could make the windows look any smoother? Can I sand it?

Whetstones are my worst enemy

First of all - I have mad respect for each and every single one of you. But I am at the point of never wanting to touch a whetstone again lol

I have recently gotten into whittling and was excited cause - "Oh, I just need a knife and some wood!".. Little did I know how hard it was to sharpen a knife - yall make it look so easy

Every time I've tried to sharpen it I somehow dull the knife more than it was before sharpening - I get the bur going, try to remove it and its still dull I don't understand what I'm doing wrong 🤣 (I've never been able to cut through paper like they always show)

So I have many questions:

what can I do when whittling to prolong the time between having to sharpen my knives? I have a ceramic honing rod, a leather strop and a 6000-1000 grit doublesided whetstone

Should I hone my blades when whittling every say 15 minutes? Should I use the strop after every session? How often do I need to do these things?

And finally - for a beginner who has absolutely no patience - what sharpening style would you recommend?

2 of my favourite misprints!

I pulled both of these from some EOE collector bundles and thought they were meant to be this way as some cool alternate version - but realised that wasn't the case later on

How do misprints in this way happen anyways?

Now, I've finally had my first lesson and learned so much that has helped me improve and learn how to proceed.

With my bow hold corrected, I'm experiencing much less cramping. However, I have a different type of pain from what is usually described by others.

The skin on my thumb, where the thumb meets the bow, is where it tends to get very sore when playing for more than, say, 30 minutes?

I'm aware your left-hand fingers need to get used to the pressure, but I've not seen much about this type of pain in the bow thumb before. Yet, that thumb hurts quite a bit more for me than my left-hand fingers.

Is this normal? Will my thumb build up calluses and get used to it, or am I likely doing something wrong?

Thanks again for the help!

I bought myself a cheap cello to see if I would enjoy it - I've taught myself many other instruments (including attempting the violin and failing..)

I've got a single cello lesson next week to make sure I don't teach myself any bad habbits that I'll regret over the years. (As I don't really have the funds for lots of lessons, I'll be taking some here and there just to make sure I'm doing okay in my progress)

Now, when playing the cello I can't quite seem to figure out how to sit with it in my breast area.. But I'm not quite sure if this is appropriate to ask a male teacher - so I'm here with my question. (Idk if this is appropriate here either but I kinda need an answer)

I don't have a very large chest - small to medium I'd say, so I find it really awkward to try and position the cello on my body - do I position it on or under?

Thank you for any help and sorry for the awkward question

Edit: Thank you all for the quick and kind responses - it means a lot! I've found while playing today that the back pain might stem from the fact that I still have to look where my fingers need to be placed and as it's becoming more automatic it actually doesn't hurt as much anymore 🔥
