What sequence should filling wood grain be completed? Planning to fill grain with joint compound so should I Sand-Prime-fill-prime or sand-fill-prime?

Preparing to paint cabinets. Planning on getting new hinges and handles. Question is do I fill old screw holes with wood and glue or wood filler? Or a better option I’m not thinking about. Thanks
