Renovating your kitchen in Ahmedabad? Here’s everything you need to know about choosing the right laminate (most people get this wrong)

Kitchen laminate is one of those decisions that looks simple but can cause a lot of regret if you get it wrong. Your kitchen handles heat, oil, moisture, and daily rough use — the laminate you pick needs to survive all of it.

Here's what I've seen work and what doesn't after years of supplying building materials in Ahmedabad.

The two main laminate finishes for kitchen

SF (Suede Finish / Matte)
- Smooth, non-reflective surface
- Hides fingerprints and minor scratches well
- Very popular for modern minimal kitchen looks
- Easy to maintain — wipe clean with a damp cloth
- Best choice if you have kids or heavy daily kitchen use

Gloss
- Shiny, reflective surface
- Makes the kitchen look bigger and brighter
- Looks premium and luxurious
- Needs more regular cleaning to stay looking good

Honest advice — you want that premium look, gloss works beautifully. Now a days gloss laminate are most used in kitchen

---

What about anti-scratch laminate?

Yes it exists and yes it works. Significantly more durable than standard laminate — especially useful near the cooking area where utensils and vessels cause daily wear.

The catch — it is noticeably more expensive than standard laminate. In a full kitchen renovation budget it does add up.

My take — if budget allows, use anti-scratch laminate at least on the lower cabinets and near the cooking area where maximum wear happens. Use standard SF or gloss on upper cabinets where wear is minimal. Smart split that saves money without compromising where it matters.

---

Thickness — does it matter?

Yes. Standard kitchen laminate comes in 1mm thickness which is perfectly adequate for most kitchens.

However Royaltouch offers 1.25mm thickness which gives noticeably better durability and a more solid feel. If you're building a kitchen meant to last 15-20 years, the extra thickness is worth asking your carpenter about.

---

Brands available in Ahmedabad and what to know

- Durian— reliable, widely available, good range of finishes
- Aerolam— good quality, popular with contractors
- Royaltouch — premium option, only brand offering 1.25mm thickness locally
- Greenlam — one of the most trusted names in India, consistent quality
- Century Laminate — very established brand, good durability track record

All five are genuine options. The brand matters less than the finish and thickness for most homeowners. But if someone tells you brand doesn't matter at all and gives you an unbranded sheet — walk away.

---

Quick checklist before your carpenter orders kitchen laminate

- Decide finish first — SF or gloss based on your lifestyle
- Ask for 1mm minimum thickness — confirm before ordering
- If budget allows, ask about anti-scratch for lower cabinets
- Ask to see physical samples — colours look very different on screen vs real life
- Make sure same brand and batch is used throughout — colour consistency matters
- Get the brand name and product code in writing before work starts

---

Kitchen laminate is a 15 year decision. Spend 30 minutes choosing it properly.

Planning home renovation in Ahmedabad? Don’t make this small mistake that most people regret during monsoon

If you're renovating your home in Ahmedabad and your carpenter is ordering inner laminate for your cabinets and wardrobes — stop and read this first.

Most homeowners don't even know inner laminate is a choice. They just let the carpenter decide. And 9 out of 10 times, the carpenter orders white/ow 0.8mm

Here's what you actually need to know:

---

**What is inner laminate?**

It's the laminate used on the inside surface of your cabinets, wardrobes, and kitchen units. You see it every time you open a door or drawer. Most people focus only on the outside finish and completely ignore this.

---

**The two thickness options — 0.8mm vs 0.92mm**

This is where most homeowners get shortchanged without knowing it.

- **0.8mm** — standard thickness, works fine during most of the year
- **0.92mm** — slightly thicker, noticeably more durable

Here's the thing — during Ahmedabad monsoon, humidity causes 0.8mm inner laminate to lift slightly at edges and corners over time. It's a slow damage but it happens. 0.92mm handles the moisture and humidity significantly better.

The price difference between 0.8mm and 0.92mm is very small. In the overall budget of a full home renovation, it makes almost no difference to your total cost. But the difference in longevity is real — especially if you're in Ahmedabad where monsoon humidity hits hard every year.

My honest advice — just go 0.92mm. You won't feel it in your budget but you will feel it in 5 years.

---

**The three finish options — which one to pick?**

Inner laminate comes in three main finishes:

- **White / OW (Off White)** — clean, bright, makes the inside of cabinets look spacious and fresh
- **Fabric** — most popular right now, looks premium, feels modern
- **Wooden** — warm tone, matches wooden exterior finishes well

Fabric finish is what most people are choosing these days and honestly it does look great. But this is purely personal preference — there's no wrong answer here. Pick what makes you happy every time you open your wardrobe.

What I would say is — don't let your carpenter choose this for you. It takes 30 seconds to pick a finish and you'll be looking at it for the next 10-15 years.

---

**Quick checklist before your carpenter places the order:**

- Ask specifically for 0.92mm thickness — not 0.8mm
- Ask to see the finish samples before confirming — white, fabric, wooden
- Make sure the same laminate brand is used throughout for consistency
- Don't mix finishes across rooms unless you have a reason

---

Small decision, long term impact. Hope this helps someone avoid a regret they didn't know was coming.

After years of working in the plywood trade in Ahmedabad, I see the same mistakes happen over and over. Contractors cut corners, homeowners don't know what to ask, and people end up with warped cabinets or swollen doors within 2 years. So here's an honest guide.

---

**1. Not all plywood is the same — grade matters a lot**

Most people just say "give me good plywood" without knowing there are three main types:

- **BWP (Boiling Water Proof)** — strongest, waterproof, best for kitchens, bathrooms, areas with moisture. Most expensive but worth it.

- **MR (Moisture Resistant)** — good for bedrooms, living rooms, wardrobes. Not fully waterproof but handles humidity well.

- **Commercial Grade** — cheapest, fine for temporary use or low-stress areas. Do NOT use in kitchen or bathroom.

Most contractors use Commercial grade everywhere to save money — and charge you for BWP. Always ask for the grade in writing.

---

**2. Ahmedabad humidity is your plywood's biggest enemy**

Our summers are brutal and monsoon humidity is real. Cheap plywood absorbs moisture, swells, and warps within one season. Always use minimum MR grade — even for bedroom furniture. BWP for anything near water.

---

**3. How to check plywood quality yourself**

You don't need to be an expert. Try these:

- **Tap test** — tap the surface, it should sound solid and consistent, not hollow in patches

- **Edge check** — look at the cross-section, layers should be even and tight with no gaps or voids

- **ISI mark** — always check for IS:303 (commercial/MR) or IS:710 (BWP) certification mark

- **Thickness** — a 19mm sheet should actually be 19mm, cheap ones are often 17-17.5mm

---

**4. Don't over-buy thickness**

- Wardrobe shutters flat one not door— 12mm is enough

- Cabinet carcass — 16-18mm

- Kitchen bottom cabinet — 19mm BWP

- Flooring base — 12mm

Buying thicker than needed just wastes money and adds unnecessary weight.

---

Hope this helps anyone planning a renovation or new home in Ahmedabad. Happy to answer any questions in the comments about grades, brands, or what to use where.
