New fridge.. is it taking over the room?

Just got a new fridge freezer and went bigger that perhaps necessary , feeling like it’s taking over my little cabin but maybe that’s just because it’s a new object in the room. Let me know what you guys think, or any ideas to soften it with shelves maybe to the left side. Thanks in advance

Is it worth turning on the hood every time the stove is in use?

This has somehow become a regular argument in our house.

We got a ducted hood about six months ago. It's definitely better than the recirculating hood we had before. If I'm frying something, cooking with oil, or making anything smoky, I turn it on without even thinking about it. But if I'm just boiling pasta or have a pot simmering with the lid on, I usually leave it off. To me it's just steam. I'll crack a window and can literally see it drifting out, so I've never really felt the need to run the hood for that. My wife thinks I'm completely wrong. Her rule is basically that if the stove is on, the hood should be on too. Doesn't matter what's in the pot. Sometimes she'll turn the hood on before I even start cooking becaushe she likes having the air moving from the start.

Now I'm wondering if I've been looking at it the wrong way. Is there actually a good reason to vent steam every time you cook, or is this more of a personal preference thing? Curious what everyone else does.

Secondhand good quality kitchen

Hello everyone I think I know you know the question to this ! I found a secondhand good quality kitchen. I would say pretty reasonable but obviously I have to remove it and transported to where I live and then refigure to my kitchen. I am on my tight budget, but I do want to have a quality kitchen. I hate the look of new kitchens. . Any advice much appreciated “#the smaller kitchen is of my unit. I’m starting again after messy break up. I want to have a pantry where the oven is and then move the oven to underneath the cooktop all new flooring and new cookware.

Kitchen Model cost

I’ve started a side hustle doing kitchen renderings. I am a kitchen designer at a custom cabinet shop by day and have started making sketch up models and renderings on the side for interior designs. I have no clue what people are charging for a service like this. Chat gpt tells me $800-$1200 for models with elevations and $250 for just a model. There are people on fiver that will do it for $50. What is a reasonable amount to be charging. I did a three walled kitchen, mudroom, laundry and dinette and it took me 6 hours. I’m probably slow but any input is welcomed from those doing this as a business. Thank you so much

Added this to the kitchen renovation and it is my favourite feature

Because I am 5’4” I used to roll out dough at the dining room table instead of the counters. Standards height counters don’t work for me if I’m working hard at kneading or mixing by hand. I asked the cabinet makers for a recessed step and they delivered! Apparently the mechanism is widely available and it wasn’t the first time they made this. I thought I was an innovator but I guess not! Still, I am so very happy with it!

Fireclay v Stainless Steel Sink

We have a Kohler stainless steel workstation sink in our current home. It has a ton of scratches on it, but it’s stain resistant and overall we’re happy with it. We’re considering a Kohler fireclay kitchen sink for our new home which will have a more traditional style. I’ve never had a white sink before but I’ve seen several that are stained and/or chipped. Would love to hear your thoughts on fireclay v stainless steel and/or other materials (cast iron, composite granite, etc). I don’t like to use a basin rack in my kitchen sink, even though I know it can protect the sink from wear and tear.

Refreshing kitchen on a budget

New house. Kitchen is not our style - really not a fan of the the quartz countertop brownish color but not in budget to change it right now. We don’t love the distressed finishes of the cabinets. There is also an jsland with totally different counters and wood base from rest of kitchen. Any suggestions for more affordable cosmetic updates? Floors will also be stained to a light /white oak color. Our style is generally light airy and modern. We tend to lean towards neutrals with pops of color - in this case maybe the window seat cushion.

Some initial thoughts:
We could paint cabinets (just white?) change hardware and possibly replace backsplash though it not sure if that’s feasible. Also looking to update modern light fixture, and window seat cushion cover and get some modern table / chairs. We will definitely paint the base of the island to match the final cabinet color.

I’m stumped and would love some suggestions.

Under-cabinet magnetic tablet holder for kitchen recipes

Some months ago, I started building a recipe book around Mealie. My tablet lived in a little stand on the counter. It picked up crumbs, was in the way, and the stand was too short to easily read while cooking.

I wanted an alternative that:

  • Was not on the counter
  • Was closer to eye-level with an adjustable angle
  • Would allow the tablet to stay on a charger in use
  • Would tuck away when not in use
  • Didn't feel chintzy or unstable
  • Would allow me to easily remove the tablet
  • Wouldn't rely on wood screws
  • Wouldn't require a 3D printer or fabrication skills beyond drilling holes
  • Wouldn't be too ugly

I mulled solutions like wall mounts (didn't want to drill tile) and a magnet behind a cabinet door (still need to store the tablet elsewhere to charge, unclear holding power) before settling on this approach.

It's essentially just a friction hinge and a plate to hold some magnets.

Item Link Cost (as of 6/25)
6061 Aluminum Bar (8"x3"x0.3") https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FSQX5G4T $11
Adjustable Torque Hinge https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FN3VYQBK $18
M6x10mm Threaded Nut Insert https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G4RF8RTD $4
Neodymium Magnets 110lb 1.26"x1.18"x0.24" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B1M73Y18 $10
Adhesive Metal Plates 1.18"x2.36" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GCJT3XQW $4
USB-C Magnetic Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GFD4SPDB $7
M6 Bolt Nut Assortment https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FGV89DVB $10

In use

Generally, it's great. The hinge adjusts to any tension and easily holds the tablet tucked and at a usable angle. The tablet doesn't move in use, though I'll stabilize vibrations with a finger if I'm typing something lengthy. The magnets are powerful enough that I can adjust the support angle by grabbing the tablet, but they don't prevent me from removing it.

Build thoughts

  • I used a drill, a drill guide, a couple of bits, and an M6 tap set. I did a bit of edge chamfering with a bench grinder. The grinder and the tap set aren't really necessary.
  • The magnets are too powerful. Four would be plenty, even at a smaller size. Low-profile neodymium bar magnets (amazon.com/dp/B0CZMRT14T) would be even better. The adhesive included with the magnets was strong enough to negate the need to screw them in place.
  • Because the magnets are so powerful, the two threaded screws I added for handles are redundant. I'm using them as cord wraps, but wouldn't bother installing them again.
  • I chose aluminum for the plate because I opted to tap my bolt holes, and it was light, stiff, and in the right shape, but you could just as easily use thinner steel, HDPE, or wood, pairing bolts with nuts. Anything over 0.3" thick won't allow the hinge ends to be parallel in the storage position.
  • The threaded nut inserts would have benefited from a bit of countersinking. They're slightly proud of the shelf bottom, so the hinge isn't perfectly flat. I may fix this. The tablet will end up parallel to the bottom of the cabinet.
  • When pre-drilling the cabinet floor for the nut inserts, use a drill depth stop to ensure you don't punch through. Pick an insert length suitable for your cabinet. I wouldn't recommend wood screws for this, they'll work loose over time. Nut inserts also look very clean.
  • If you have a particularly deep lip on your cabinet, you can always mount the hinge on a wood spacer. Likewise if you want more angle adjustment range.
  • The USB-C "Magsafe"-style adapter, I used because I had one; any right-angle USB-C cable would be just as good. Cable routing can be more concealed if you mount the tablet upside-down.
  • Add $5 for a spray can to make it a nice black.

Anyway, hope it's of use or inspiring to someone. Happy making!

Any idea to cover the top of the duct cover?

I installed a range hood but I only needed the lower duct cover because the vent duct exits horizontally (and I cannot use the upper cover because of the beam). I am fine with that, but  the problem is that the duct cover is exposed at the top. What can I use to cover the top? I searched in Amazon, Temu and AliExpress, but I din’t find any ‘Duct cover upper cover’. What do you recommend me?

Need something to protect white backsplash behind stove when cooking

TLDR: need something to protect white backsplash behind stove when cooking.

——————

Need some ideas for what can be done to protect my kitchen backsplash from oil or cooking splatter.

Our stove doesn’t have the control console on the back so our white tile and grout are super exposed to all the splatter and steam when cooking.

We use the fan above the stove but stuff inevitably hits the back wall.

I’ve seen peel and stick plastic, stainless steel sheet, and tempered glass, but thought I’d ask here if anyone is using something the find works particularly well.

Thanks!

Gap next to stove

Hello fellow renters! I am working on making my kitchen a bit more functional. One of the improvements I want to make is filling the gap between my stove and counter, because of course they don’t fit perfectly next to each other. I bought stove gap covers, but they are only 2.25in wide, which seems to be the conventional length. Our gap is closer to 3.5-4in.

Has anyone found “extra wide” gap covers they can point me to? Or have any other ideas for how I can fill the chasm in my kitchen? Thanks!

Fridge sticking out

We did it, finally upgraded to a french door fridge! I've been going back and forth between side by sides or french doors and ultimately went with one of the Samsung Stainless Steel Bespoke models. It just makes more sense to have wider shelves and being able to see everything around eye level is very, very nice. Plus, there's an app to track energy usage.

However, it does stick out farther out then our last fridge. I'm wondering if that's too noticeable or if I should maybe extend out the cabinet next to it?

Which one to choose between bamboo storage items and solid wood storage items?

Hello everyone, I plan to buy a kitchen storage box for my kitchen, but I'm stuck between two choices: one is a bamboo storage item, and the other is a solid wood storage room, but the price of the solid wood storage room is $10 more expensive than the bamboo storage item. Which should I choose?
