I (21F) have been dating "Carlos" (23M) for 3 years. Our relationship has always been great — he's caring, faithful (as far as I know), and present. Recently, at a gathering with friends, someone who's known him since his teens casually said: "Wow, he used to cheat on all his exes, it was even a running joke among us."

I was shocked. When I confronted Carlos, he first laughed, then got uncomfortable and admitted it: yes, he cheated on two ex-girlfriends (the ones he told me about). His justification: "I was immature," "I was 17, 18 years old," "with you I'm different, I've changed."

The problem is that I can no longer trust him. I know it was before me, but repeated cheating isn't a mistake — it's a character pattern. He might be faithful now, but what about 5 years from now? What about when we go through a rough patch?

I told him I want to break up. He said I'm crazy, insecure, that I'm punishing him for things he did as a teenager. My friends are divided: some say "the past is the past," others say "once a cheater, always a cheater." His mother texted me saying I'm unfair and childish.

All I know is that every time he goes out alone or takes too long to reply, I get anxious imagining him lying to someone else.
