2nd district Dem primary. Who are you voting for?
I’m really struggling because I consider myself a progressive but don’t know who to support. Melanie Williams is obviously the most left in this race but let’s be real, she’s a longer than long shot. I’d rather support whoever is the most progressive of the candidates with a shot of winning. Cavanaugh is endorsed by the Progressive Caucus and Powell by New Dems, which would suggest that it’s Cavanaugh, but between reading his website and watching the forum, I have not heard or seen on single specific policy proposal from him that I would say is notably progressive. Take health care, for example. He supports “protecting Medicare and Medicaid from Republican attacks” (paraphrasing) but even the most moderate Dem would say that. Powell specifically notes she would advocate for a public option. It’s not single-payer but it’s a step in the right direction, at least. Cavanaugh has a lot of labor support, which is cool, but is that because of family connections in the area’s political class or is he truly the most pro-labor? Pro-Israel groups have run ads for Powell, which is concerning, but I wouldn’t say Cavanaugh has been outspoken about human rights abuses in Palestine or called for halting military aid, etc. Anyone else struggling here?
