I think too many people tend to put importance on coverage moves whenever I see moveset recommendations. All you really need for most occasions is STAB moves, and maybe one high powered coverage move such as Shadow Ball, Psychic, Thunderbolt, or Ice Beam. Super-effective damage isn't always worth it, the dopamine hit is a lie sometimes.

Putting Shock Wave on Alakazam is literally only useful for Gyarados, Slowbro, and Starmie. There are no Dark types, and there is only 1 steel-type evolution line, which are also part electric, so Psychic deals more damage. Super-effective Shock Wave does less damage than STAB neutral Psychic. Neutral Shock Wave does less damage than STAB resisted Psychic. You're better off with Thief or Shadow Ball, to have a move to hit Psychic types, but Shadow Ball would be more useful on another Pokemon unless you're willing to grind for multiple TMs.

Arcanine doesn't need anything more than Flamethrower and Strength. STAB neutral Flamethrower is doing more damage than Super-Effective Bite. What are you hitting with bite, Starmie? Slowbro? You shouldn't be using Arcanine against those anyway. Strength on things that resist fire, otherwise, Flamethrower away.

Pin Missile and Bite on Jolteon? Same thing, just use Thunderbolt. Although Pin Missile on the Rival's Exeggutor is satisfying, but you still have to use it on average 3 times to KO it. Even on Alakazam, Pin Missile is only dealing more damage than Thunderbolt if it hits 5 times.

Brick Break on Snorlax? If you want to hit Rock-types, just use Surf, added bonus of also hitting Ground for super-effective damage. If you want to hit normal-types, max power Return is doing just as much damage, but even then Body Slam and Brick Break will both be KOing a Pokemon in the same number of hits in most situations. Psychic is another one I see often. You're not staying in against fighting types, and the only Poison-type Pokemon that take more damage from Psychic than Body Slam/Surf are Koffing and Weezing.

TL;DR In most situations, use STAB moves, and only bother with coverage moves if they're at least 80 base power.
