Second Elite 4 Run

Posted a while back with my first Elite 4 team, which included Blastoise, Mr. Mime, Gengar, Rhydon, Electrode, and Flareon.

Went to the Seven Islands and got some new friends in Heracross and Kingdra to spice things up for the rematch. Have never used Kingdra before and I’ve only used Heracross in Gold/Silver.

All mons were leveled at 62, which gave me some challenges with the level 70+ mons.

Gengar (Tbolt, Psychic, Giga Drain, Shadow Ball) - was the MVP of this go around. There was very little that could switch in and not get hit hard. Lorelei and Bruno got whooped by him. Against Agatha, it nearly OHKO Agatha’s Level 70 Gengar and my rival’s Alakazam. He out-sped them too. Shame with neutral nature it just needs a hair more power to close the deal with beefier mons. My Gengar has very little chin to take hits, which resulted in some rough revenge kills by psychics from my rival and Agatha. Without my Electrode, Gengar was my best answer to Gyarados.

Mr. Mime (Psychic, Baton Pass, Magical Leaf, Calm Mind) - my runner up to Electrode in my first run, Mr. Mine did alright this go around but had a harder time taking hits and giving damage. Unlike last time, I wasn’t able to set up Calm Mind Baton Pass sweeps with Mr. Mime. I was shut down hard against Lorelei when her Dewgong pulled signal beam out of a hat. By the end of the run, Gengar and Mr. Mime were switching in and out to spam Psychics to take out my rival’s Venusaur

Blastoise (Surf, Ice Beam, Toxic, Rain Dance) - I’d say that Blastoise further proved his worth this go around and is the runner up for MVP. Blastoise once again shined against Lance, this time wearing down Dragonites with Toxic and Ice Beams. I did have to heal him a bunch against Lance to pull out the win. Needed more leveling to really go toe-for-toe with Dragonites. I also didn’t get the moral victory this time of having my Blastoise having the honor to KO Venusaur. Solarbeam understandably shut that hope down.

Heracross (Bulk up, Rock Tomb, Brick Break, Megahorn) - surprisingly wasn’t used much until the fight with my rival, where it came in clutch to clean up Alakazam after Gengar died and forced my rival to use heals on his Tyranitar. Generally, my thoughts on Heracross is that it has excellent typing, moves, and surprising special defense with an equally surprisingly poor physical defense. It doesn’t like taking chunky hits, but what Pokemon does. I was happy to have it as an answer to the rival fight.

Rhydon (Earthquake, Double Edge, Rock Slide, Brick Break) - last playthrough I was disappointed in Rhydon not doing better against the Elite 4. My conclusion is that Rock/Ground Pokemon are very situational in how they can and should be used because of their large weaknesses and weak special defense. Walled Agatha’s Crobat hard and took some hard hits from Dragonite. Having Megahorn might give it just a little more coverage against special mons. I think playing against my friends as a pivot with good prediction of switches is probably where it will shine. It is still my hardest hitting Pokemon with Gengar running up.

Kingdra (Dragon Dance, Return, Surf, Ice Beam): perhaps the most memorably bad moment of my run was Dragon Dancing together with Lance’s Kingdra. Sounds fun right? After 3 Dragon Dances, I went for a Return and did less than half a bar on his Kingdra. His Kingdra then responded the next turn with a Hyper Beam and absolutely crushed my Kingdra. I guess my Kingdra doesn’t like me enough. I want to experiment with Kingdra as a mixed dragon dancer with Blastoise to cover Rain Dance for additional boost/Swift Swim. I think my problem is that Kingdra’s stats are middling and setup requires it to be more tanky. I felt that my Blastoise outperformed it way more than it should have. May even go on to say that I prefer using Altaria as a Dragon dancer in Emerald.

In summary:

  1. Gengar - nothing is safe going against it

  2. Blastoise - Rain Dance/Torrent boosts with Toxic to chip away so faster mons can clean up. Hard to kill.

  3. Mr. Mime - slightly outgunned but Psychic support was critical to win certain matches

  4. Heracross - for very specific matchups (Tyranitar, Alakazam), it was very crucial. Sort of like a backup option if Gengar and Blastoise couldn’t beat)

  5. Rhydon - has its shining moments and if it survives, it is going to make that Pokemon remember with a crushing hit

  6. Kingdra - not giving up on her but I was a bit disappointed. I think Lance has the right idea with Hyper Beam. Felt a bit duplicative with Blastoise but maybe can excel in a different team mix with more Rain Dance support.

I missed my Flareon and Electrode this run. Flareon Fire Blast would have really helped against my rival’s Venusaur and weaponize Sunny Day against it. Electrode speed control and utility was missed although I felt Gengar did excellent with electric coverage.

Hope you enjoyed my long post.

Found a cool save on a LeafGreen auction

I found LeafGreen on eBay with a save file of 138 Pokédex and 46 hours. I’m trying to complete the Pokédex so I asked what their starter is and if they have any good pokemon. He said he bought this way back and it’s the previous owners save but Charizard and Venusaur are stored and has a level 100 Rayquaza. Shares a picture and I’m like oh… OH. Bought it for a bit over $140. This box alone is stacked and saves so much time!

Lucky egg

An hour in, and the second chansey caught had an egg, saved me so much time, using a level 26 mon in the front with max repel helps the odds of encountering her.

Childhood dream complete

Hello everyone. A month or so ago I completed my living dex (sans mew) and I wanted to share in that joy. This was done on my og gba advance sp, my childhood copy of leafgreen, a firered copy some kid gave me back in hs for 15 bucks (hehe sucker), and a crystal colored original game boy advance that I'm 90% certain is a knockoff, but it's only purpose was trading and it fulfilled that, and it was relatively cheap, but theres no price on childhood dreams dangit. Started working on this like 5 months ago (so had no idea about the remakes, but theres somthing special about straining your eyes looking at a tiny screen lol) Anyway just wanted to share a little happiness today incase anyone needed to have little kid them smile like little kid me is. Cheers.
