Hello,

Having a potty training struggle and looking for tips/advice/a spot to briefly vent. My son is 4 and has been diagnosed as autistic, and we heard from family and friends in similar situations that potty training may be a struggle, but I'm at a loss on what to do. My son will poop and pee on the potty, and there have even been times where we've gone a day or two without an accident, but it's only when my wife and I are constantly reminding him to go sit on the potty and physically taking him to it. He will sit and go, and sit back down and try again if we think he got up too fast, but if we aren't keeping an eye on him constantly then he will potty in his pants whether or not hes in a diaper, training underwear, or regular underwear. He doesn't seem to care at all whether or not he goes on the potty on in his diaper.

I know it bothers him because most times as soon as he poops in his diaper he strips himself and makes a bigger mess. We have tried potty presents and potty treats, but it hasn't made a difference.

I work from home and try to check in on him, but it's very irregular when he'll go, sometimes he's fine after an hour and sometimes he'll go in his diaper within minutes of getting off the potty. My wife is also at home and tries to keep eyes on him, but he has a younger sibling who needs attention and help so we can't be watching him at all times.

Anyone have advice on getting him to take himself to the potty when he needs to go?
