Asking for a friend who doesn't use Reddit.

"Hi, I’m planning a move from Saint Paul, MN to Wichita, KS sometime in July and could really use some advice.

I’m currently in a 1 bed / 1 bath. I don’t have a huge amount of stuff, but enough that I can’t just fit everything in a car. I don't currently have a car and will fly to Kansas.

Main items include:

  • mattress + bedframe
  • futon
  • small table + 2 chairs
  • foldable table
  • 2 plastic drawer units
  • lamp
  • PC setup
  • boxes of clothes + kitchen items (still figuring out exact volume)

This is my first time doing a longer-distance move with furniture, so I’m trying to decide between:

  • Hiring a full-service moving company
  • Using a container service (PODS, U-Pack, 1-800-PACK-RAT) and either loading it myself or hiring local labor

From what I’ve read, container services are usually cheaper and more flexible, but require more work on my end. Full-service movers are easier, but significantly more expensive...

I’m mainly trying to figure out:

  • What makes the most sense for a smaller 1BR move like this
  • Whether container services are actually worth it at this scale
  • Any Twin Cities companies or labor services you’d recommend for loading/unloading
  • Any movers you’ve personally had good (or bad) experiences with locally

If you’ve done a similar move (especially Midwest → Midwest), I’d really appreciate hearing what worked for you and what you’d do differently.

Thanks in advance!"
