WIBTA - I want to report my SIL for elder abuse
Tonight I 54 F and my husband 54 found out that my 57 F SIL has 'borrowed' $39,000 from my 81 year old MIL over the past 18 months. We only discovered this because we were filling out financial paperwork to move her into an assisted living home and discovered that money was missing. This is over 30% of the money she had 18 months ago!
My SIL has always gotten away with things in the family because when she doesn't get what she wants she throws fits until her parents just gave in to 'keep the peace'. When my husband or his siblings would ask about the money his mom would just say 'don't worry about it' and change the subject. Now we know the truth.
I want to call Adult Protective Services and the Police. I am a civilian who works for the police, and I know this is a felony that carries serious consequences. My SIL is also on welfare and will be in trouble for having received these funds and not reporting them.
I am just sick that this has happened to my MIL. She is a sweetheart and doesn't deserve this. She is having memory issues and health issues, which is why we are having her move. My SIL lives in another state. My husband sent her an email telling her that we know what she has done and that she is not to ask for any more money at all. She responded cursing and saying she has been paying it back, but we know that is not true, as there is no money coming into the account.
So WIBTA calling it in? Any advice on what to do? I know this will cause problems with his siblings, but I just feel it is the right thing to do.
