Denied for Autoloans, not sure why or how to fix.

I have 2 main questions or items I really need help or advice with. I'm trying to get a used car for my wife and kids from a dealer. I have 2 open accounts on my credit, 1 is my auto loan I pay every month no issues. The other is a credit card my father opened about 10 or 12 years ago in my name kind of with my permission. I was 19 or 20 and dumb when it happened. It's been maxed out for years and he only made minimum payments. He recently passed away and not making payments obviously, so it's just sitting there. Usually when I'm denied auto loan they say it is from too much debt or I don't make enough money. I don't know what to do about this debt or how to get approved. I was approved just fine for my vehicle a few years ago. Back then I also had a credit card I would pay my bills with and then payoff instantly so my credit was over 700, maybe 750. Now that account is closed.
