Hi all! I’m a STM with a pretty fussy 4 week old. She is EBF. Most of the time that she is awake, she’s fussy or having what we call “gas attacks” where she seems to be in pain.

We’re working with a lactation consultant who has identified a posterior tongue tie and a lip tie. Baby also has mild laryngomalacia. I am told that I have a strong letdown and an oversupply. All of these things make it so that my little one takes in a lot of air when feeding. The current theory is that this is causing a lot of her discomfort and possibly silent reflux.

We’re seeing a pediatric dentist about having the ties released soon. Does anyone have experience with oral dysfunction causing colicky behaviour in their newborns? And if so, did releasing the oral ties help?

Hi all! I’m a STM with a four week old who has been struggling with discomfort after feeding for a few weeks now. We’ve been working with a wonderful and knowledgeable lactation consultant who has confirmed an upper lip tie and a posterior tongue tie as well as mild laryngomalacia. I also have a very fast let down which can cause the baby to cough and sputter during the feeds. She only spits up small amounts on occasion but may be dealing with silent reflux. Hiccups and burps seem to make her very uncomfortable and she does seem to struggle with bad lower gas pain. All of this makes for a pretty grumpy baby when she is awake. It’s hard to see.

The LC believes that the baby is uncomfortable due to aerophagia (I.e. taking in too much air when she feeds). She struggles to maintain a deep latch. The pediatrician isn’t concerned from a medical standpoint because she is gaining weight well but I’m really struggling to see her in pain all the time. We’re in a cycle of constantly feeding for comfort which ultimately causes more discomfort.

We’re pursuing a consultation with a pediatric dentist to get her oral ties revised. Does anyone have any experience with the oral ties release as it relates to aerophagia and has pain in little ones? I’m hoping it will decrease the amount of pain/discomfort and allow us to get on a bit more of a regular feeding schedule (full feeds as opposed to snacking for comfort).

I should also mention:

- We EBF in a laid back position

- I express my letdown before latching

- I do not pump at all to avoid creating even more of an oversupply

- I hold her upright for 15 mins or so after feeding

- I try to burp her frequently though she is difficult to burp at times

- We have seen an osteopath and we do exercises and stretches as prescribed by the LC

- I am currently block feeding to help regulate my supply

- My first also had oral ties and laryngomalacia but was impacted differently. We had her oral ties released and it was a good experience. Her latch improved quite a bit.
