Genuine help needed choosing between the BB58 and BB54
Hi all!
I’d really appreciate some help and opinions from people who own either the Black Bay 58 or Black Bay 54.
I’ve honestly never paid much attention to Tudor before (apparently my head has been in the toilet all these years), but recently I truly discovered the Tudor watches and completely fell down the rabbit hole.
I also turned 30 🎉 this year and wasn’t planning to buy anything at all… but then I came across Tudor’s watches and wow 👀... what incredible-looking pieces. I genuinely can’t believe I somehow missed Tudor for so long.
I currently own a Rolex Datejust 36mm, but I rarely wear it because I personally feel it doesn’t really reflect me and can come across as a bit “showy.” I’d like something I can comfortably wear daily without feeling flashy, and I also like that Tudor feels more understated.
For some context, I also own an Seiko 5, Orient Bambino, a vintage IWC dress watch from the 1960s, and a TAG Heuer diver (43mm), but the TAG honestly feels pretty heavy for everyday use.
The BB58 really caught my attention, especially the black dial, gilt markers, and subtle red triangle.
I also saw that Tudor recently updated the BB58 with:
- METAS certification
- A 5-link bracelet, which honestly looks fantastic
- The TUDOR “T-fit” clasp
At the same time, the Black Bay 54 did not first appeal to me. But the more I look into it, the more it starts to appeal to me. I love that it feels more vintage-inspired and stays closer to the original 1954 Submariner design. The 37mm size sounds extremely wearable and timeless, and I really like the clean silver-tone accents on the bezel.
Part of me thinks the BB54 might actually be the better “under the radar” everyday watch — more comfortable, versatile, and maybe even something I’d appreciate more as I get older.
For reference, my wrist is around 6.7 inches / 17cm.
So now I’m genuinely torn:
- BB58: I'm emotionally drawn to BB58’s beauty and charisma. More presence, more eye-catching, more modern specs, modern vintage inspired diver.
- BB54: I'm philosophically drawn to BB54’s understated nature. More subtle, vintage, compact, and understated, looks like a pure vintage tool watch shrunk straight out of the 1950s.
For those who own either (or both), which one ended up winning you over long term?
