Is Tamil Nadu witnessing the beginning of a different governance model under Vijay?

In just the last 48 hours, three decisions have sparked major discussion:

  • Reports say the government has moved to stop the long-criticised “party fund” culture linked to building approvals and permits. (The Times of India)
  • The government is considering banning liquor sales for anyone under 21 years old as part of stricter TASMAC reforms. (The Times of India)
  • The ₹1000 women's assistance scheme is reportedly continuing without interruption despite the change in government. (Facebook)

What’s interesting is that these moves combine three very different political signals:

  • anti-corruption messaging,
  • social conservatism on alcohol,
  • and continuation of welfare politics.

Usually, new governments either remove previous schemes completely or focus only on symbolism during the first few weeks.

But TVK seems to be trying a mix of welfare continuity + administrative reforms + image-building at the same time.

Too early to judge, obviously.

But compared to how most people expected a “celebrity government” to function, the first few days have been politically more calculated than many predicted.

Curious how people here see it:
actual governance shift or just smart optics so far?

You will quietly thank this move.

Everyone is angry that 717 TASMAC shops were suddenly shut down.
No warning. No preparation. No “grace period.”
I understand the frustration.

But maybe… just maybe…
some decisions are meant to hurt for a short time to heal society for a long time.

Six months from now, many families may quietly thank this move.

Students walking to school without drunk crowds nearby.
Women feeling safer at bus stops.
Temple areas becoming peaceful again.
Travellers and tourists seeing a cleaner Tamil Nadu.
Daily wage workers saving money instead of losing it every evening.

And to those saying:
“People will just go drink somewhere else.”

Not everyone will.

Convenience creates habit.
When access becomes harder, consumption drops for many casual and daily drinkers. That’s reality.

No government can eliminate alcohol overnight.
But reducing easy availability near residential, temple, school, and public areas is still a step forward.

Today people may complain.
Tomorrow some homes may become calmer because of it.

Sometimes leadership is not about doing what is popular.
It is about doing what will matter years later.

One thing people underestimate about BJP/RSS strategy is that they usually think long-term, not just election-to-election.

I don’t think what’s happening in Tamil Nadu is only about whether TVK forms government right now.

The bigger signal is this:
TVK celebrations were happening outside Tamil Nadu too — Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai’s Dharavi, Delhi, etc.

That matters politically.

Just 3 years ago, most people didn’t even believe Vijay was serious about politics. Many thought it was celebrity hype that would fade away.

Now suddenly he’s being discussed as an actual political force.

And with 2029 coming up, national parties are obviously watching carefully. Especially the possibility of regional forces + opposition forces growing stronger together over time.

Whether people support Vijay or not, one thing is clear:
his rise changed the political conversation much faster than traditional parties expected.

Politics is rarely only about the next election.

A lot of it is about preventing future momentum before it becomes too big to control.

If DMK and AIADMK ever join hands to regain power in 2026, they won’t be stopping BJP.

They’ll be laying the red carpet for BJP’s entry into Tamil Nadu.

For decades, Tamil Nadu kept BJP limited because DMK and AIADMK competed against each other.

The moment both become one side, voters looking for an opposition will naturally search for a new force — and BJP will fill that vacuum.

This is exactly what Vijay understood early.

Sometimes the biggest threat to a movement doesn’t come from outside.

It comes when old rivals become indistinguishable.
