I (28F) accidentally rejected a guy (27M) - can I recover?

A guy at work asked me on a date a couple of months ago and I think I accidentally rejected him… but I actually really like him.

We had a bet going on and I ended up owing him two tickets to something. I asked him what he was going to do with them and he said: “I want to take you. I want to go on a date.”

I was completely caught off guard and got really flustered. I just laughed awkwardly and jokingly brushed past it. Looking back, I can totally see how it would have come across as a brutal rejection.

Since then, he hasn’t been rude or cold at all but he has definitely taken a step back. He doesn’t message me outside work anymore and seems more careful around me. We still get on well in person though, although I do not see him often.

From your perspective, does this sound like he was genuinely asking me out? If so, is it too late/weird to try to undo the accidental rejection?
