Former CC hater

I could not get into CC. Tried 3 times and just couldn’t do it. I read some advice that once you’re past the first 5 chapters, it’s excellent. I gave it one more try and honestly just skimmed the first chapters and started reading in earnest in chapter 3, and wow!

I stayed up way too late that night reading it and finished within 2 days. It’s a great murder mystery/fantasy. You fall in love with Bryce as her character is slowly discovered by Hunt, the angel. It’s full of surprises.

There’s so much character development throughout the book for Bryce. Reminds me somewhat of silver flames in that way.

Anyway, thought I’d drop this for anyone who hated the urban fantasy party vibe. The book and characters are not what they seem in the beginning and that’s the best part.

Spoilers I’ve seen helped me get interested, so I hope this isn’t too much.

If you’re skipping the first chapters, the important things to know are that Bryce and Danika are best friends in the truest sense. Danika’s mom, Sabine, is awful to her, and Bryce tries to help her through that. Bryce is half fae and a secret bastard daughter of the Autumn king who treated her human mom poorly, and her half brother is Ruhn, but they tell everyone they’re distant cousins. Their relationship is strained, but Ruhn keeps trying. She works for a witch named Jesiba who is morally gray. Danika is part of a wolf pack they’re both friends with.

In this world, they go through something called “the drop” which is a challenge that protects them once they’ve been through it. They can even regrow limbs and wings and heal most injuries that would kill them before the drop and it stops them aging.

I wouldn’t worry about more of the fine details as they’re revealed again.
