New Brunswick’s provincial budget outlines significant reductions to public services, including privatization. Most alarming among the cuts is the full privatization of provincially-delivered veterinary care. These aren’t just budget lines – these are real people and real services at risk. Provincial veterinarians will be phased out of work. This includes all veterinary lab and field services, medical care, foreign animal disease control, inspection and testing – meaning that almost all provincially employed veterinarians are expected to lose their jobs. This won’t save the province money. Farmers will either face higher out-of-pocket costs at private clinics or the government will end up paying more through contracts. Either way, New Brunswickers lose.We can’t afford more risk in our food systems. In a province as rural as New Brunswick, relying on private-care veterinary services is unrealistic. Many private providers don’t offer the same services as public veterinarians and are less geographically accessible, leading to delays, missed detection, and a higher risk of outbreaks when it matters most.Tell New Brunswick’s government leaders to reverse the decision. Support local farmers. Save our vets!
