Hey, I’ve got a question for people experienced in car audio 🔊
I’m trying to get the absolute maximum performance out of my subwoofer and box, because I feel like I’m not using its full potential.
Setup:
– Car: VW Golf V (2007)
– Subwoofer: Rockford Fosgate RFR2215 (1000 RMS)
– Amplifier: BassHabit Rebel RA3600W (wired to 2 ohm, ~1200 RMS)
– Box: 140–150L net, slot port ~250 cm², folded port ~70 cm (36 cm + 34 cm), ~10 cm clearance from the wall → tuned to ~31 Hz (low bass)
– Box dimensions (external): ~95 cm (width) x ~45 cm (height) x ~50 cm (depth)
– Head unit: Pioneer FH-S720BT (only HPF available, no LPF for sub in the radio)
– Wiring: 50 mm² power cable
Current settings (approx):
– Gain: ~25–40%
– LPF (on amp): ~70–80 Hz
– Subsonic: ~28–30 Hz
– Bass Boost: 0 dB
Problem:
The bass is strong, but I feel like it’s still not reaching its full potential – it doesn’t always hit as hard on low frequencies as I expected. It really comes alive only at higher volume.
Questions:
With tuning at ~31 Hz, is this already the max I can get out of this box?
Is there anything else I should improve (settings, phase, polarity, box placement in the car)?
Is subsonic at ~28–30 Hz optimal for this tuning?
Is it normal that the sub only shows full performance at higher volume?
Should I disable HPF in the head unit for the sub? I had HPF set to 63 Hz with a 12 dB slope – could that be limiting my bass?
I’m aiming for deep bass that you can really feel, not just hear.
For anyone wondering: the subwoofer is mounted in a normal position (not inverted/upside down).
Thanks in advance for any help
