20 things I personally would not recommend in Lisbon
Recently I shared 20 things to do in Lisbon and today I wanted to talk about 20 things I personally would not recommend.
IMPORTANT: this is just my opinion and shouldn’t be taken too seriously!
Buying tiles at Feira da Ladra (flea market)
Eating at one of the restaurants on Rua Augusta
Taking Tram 28 from Martim Moniz
Waiting in line for the Santa Justa Lift
Taking a tuk tuk around the tourist areas
Wearing inappropriate shoes for Lisbon’s pavement, especially on rainy days
Speaking Spanish because you assume Portuguese people speak Spanish
Taking a taxi from the airport to your accommodation
Staying in an Airbnb in the historic centre
Having drinks on Pink Street
Spending a Santo António night in Bica
Having lunch or dinner at the Time Out Market
Spending an afternoon at LX Factory
Spending a beach day in Carcavelos
Eating brunch in the Cais do Sodré / Chiado area
Waiting more than 5 minutes in line at Bifanas do Afonso
Eating pastel de bacalhau with Serra cheese and Port wine
Buying Lisbon souvenirs in souvenir shops downtown
Staying seated on public transport while elderly people are standing
Only trying pastel de nata places and never visiting a traditional Portuguese pastelaria

madeira.rtp.ptAs a solo dev building a niche SaaS, the biggest thing that’s worked for me has been writing extremely specific content instead of generic startup blogs. Posts targeting exact problems like local compliance rules, tourist tax guides, or step-by-step workflows started bringing in users from Google and even ChatGPT/AI search. The traffic was slow at first, then suddenly compounded. I’ve also found that talking directly to users and manually helping them early on gave me way better product direction than trying to over-plan features.
On the coding side, shipping fast has beaten trying to build perfect architecture. Some of the simplest features ended up being the most valuable to users. I also learned positioning matters more than I expected — being very clear about who the product is for made marketing way easier than trying to sound like a big “all-in-one AI platform.”

Just got back from Faro — a few tips for anyone visiting
Just got back from a trip to Faro and thought I’d share a few things that might help others planning a visit. I stayed near the airport, around a 10–15 minute drive from the centre. Really enjoyed the Old Town — nice atmosphere, plenty of food options, including halal food as well.
One place I liked was BD Kebab. I thought the prices were good, the food quality was solid, and the customer service was great.
I also used the local ferry to get to Praia de Faro (Faro Beach). it cost €4.10 return per person. Easy enough to use and a nice spot to spend a few hours.People in general were very friendly and helpful throughout the trip.
One bit of advice: avoid Euronet ATMs if you can, as the fees/conversion rates aren’t great. I used Multibanco ATMs instead. If you do withdraw money, always decline the currency conversion and choose to be charged in the local currency (EUR). The machine asks more than once, which feels a bit sneaky, so pay attention before confirming.
I also visited Albufeira. Getting there without a car was a little challenging at first, but I ended up using the FlixBus app and it was really cheap and convenient. The journey was around 40 minutes, and a same-day return for 2 people cost roughly £10. Albufeira was really nice. I did a dolphin watching trip there and would definitely recommend it.
That’s pretty much it — just some general thoughts and advice from my experience. If anyone has questions, feel free to ask. And apologies in advance if I’ve accidentally got any details wrong.
Hi all , I was verified as a software business on GBP and when I added an address it asked to verify with a video of my establishment, even now after I removed address? What should I do
Hello everyone,
I’ve been looking into tourist tax (taxa turística) here in Portugal, and I understand that it’s usually charged per night to guests staying in short-term rentals or hotels.
But what is this money actually used for?
I’ve heard it goes towards things like city maintenance, cleaning, and tourism promotion, but is there any transparency on how municipalities (like Lisbon, Porto, or smaller places) actually spend it?
Or does it just go into general municipal budgets?
Would be great to hear from anyone who has insight or experience with this 🙏
A subida dos juros está a tornar o crédito habitação mais exigente, enquanto a garantia pública facilita o acesso sobretudo para jovens sem poupança inicial.
Ainda assim, há alertas de que esta combinação pode aumentar o risco financeiro das famílias.

Here’s a strong comment you can post (positioning yourself + EazyAL subtly):
So I finally sat down and ran the actual numbers properly instead of just accepting fees as ""part of the deal.""
Over $4,200/month. That's not a rounding error, that's a mortgage payment on one of my smaller properties. Money I could be reinvesting in the business instead of watching disappear.
And that's just my side of it. Guests pay a service fee on top of that. So we're both getting hit, neither of us loves it, they pay more, I earn less, and the platform sits in the middle collecting from both directions on every single transaction.
I'd thought about going direct before but never taken it seriously enough to actually do anything. Once I actually saw the monthly number I couldn't ignore it anymore. been setting up a direct booking site through hostFront the past few weeks, still figuring it all out but it's moving.
Not abandoning Airbnb, it's still where discovery happens. But I'm done with it being my whole business.
Anyone else been through this? What finally made you take direct bookings seriously?
