Sony A6700 + Sigma 17-40mm + 70-350mm contre Sony A7C II + Sigma 28-70mm

Hello everyone,

I’m a former Sony A7 IV user. I used to own the Sigma 85mm DG DN Art and the Sigma 24–70mm DG DN Art which I had to sell mainly for financial reasons. I was extremely satisfied with that setup.

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to buy a brand-new Sony A6700 with the Sony 70–350mm. I’m planning to add the Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art. I previously owned the Sigma 28–50mm f/2.8 and was a bit disappointed with it. It was good for the price and weight, but I found it somewhat lacking in terms of sharpness and especially micro-contrast. The Sigma 17–40mm seems to be on a completely different level, although it costs around €1,000.

That said, I still have a few days left to return the A6700, and I’m considering switching to a Sony A7C II with the Sigma 28–70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary, since adding the Sigma 17–40mm f/1.8 to my current setup would increase the total cost significantly anyway, given that this lens alone costs around €1,000.

With the A6700, I can’t seem to achieve the same “wow” effect I had with the A7 IV, or even with my previous full-frame cameras from other brands. It’s difficult to define exactly, but I feel like I’m missing pure sharpness and a certain sense of “depth” in the image.

I really love the size and form factor of the A6700 even more than the A7 IV and I also love its autofocus, which the A7C II shares. However, I’m a bit disappointed because the A6700 seems to get noisy fairly quickly at higher ISO values (which is expected with APS-C), and overall I feel the image rendering is not quite as good. That said, perhaps the Sigma 17–40mm would improve this significantly.

My main question is:

Would a Sony A7C II with the Sigma 28–70mm produce noticeably better image quality than a Sony A6700 with the Sigma 17–40mm? For roughly €200 more, I would lose the 70–350mm but gain a full-frame setup. I’m struggling to determine whether the image quality difference I’m noticing is mainly due to the larger sensor and higher effective resolution, or if it’s mostly because I’m currently using a less capable lens.

I’d really appreciate any advice or firsthand experience.

Thanks!

QNAP TS-251D suddenly stopped recognizing my password

Hi everyone,

I have a QNAP TS-251D that I powered back on a few weeks ago. I only turn it on when needed since I basically use it as a simple network drive and not really for NAS features.

A few days ago, for no apparent reason, the password for my personal account stopped working. The default admin/admin account is disabled. The NAS suddenly no longer recognized my password and I had to reset it.

This was not a typing mistake because I had been copy/pasting the exact same password from my password manager for weeks without any issue.

Also, the NAS had not installed any system update before this happened.

How is this even possible?

How to safely configure Carbon Copy Cleaner when source and destination are already identical?

Hello everyone,

A few months ago, I switched to a MacBook Pro as my main and only computer so I now need to rethink the way I handle my backups.

That’s how I discovered CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner). At first, though, my experience setting it up was… pretty catastrophic.

Because of a mistake on my part, the backup task completely wiped the destination storage along with all the data already on it.

After a lot of time and patience, I finally managed to rebuild everything from several different sources, apparently without losing any data.

So now I’m in a situation where I have:

  • my main storage containing all my data
  • and a second drive on my NAS containing a 100% identical clone that I manually recreated myself.

What I would like to do now is properly configure my CCC tasks without risking wiping the destination again.

My questions are:

  • Can CCC compare/analyze the source and destination before the first backup so it recognizes that both drives are already identical and avoids rewriting everything?
  • If yes, what would be the safest way to set this up?
  • Is it possible to use CCC to back up from the NAS to an external drive connected directly to the NAS, or would that necessarily need to be handled through the NAS interface/software itself?

Thanks for your help

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice and feedback regarding my backup strategy as I’m not sure which direction to take anymore.

I used to be on Windows with 4TB of internal storage. All my data was stored locally and I manually backed everything up to a 4TB Crucial X9 external drive.

A few months ago, I switched to a MacBook Pro but with much less internal storage.

My first idea was to go for a NAS: a 4-bay setup with four 4TB drives. This would suit my needs well since I mainly store photos and videos that I access directly from Adobe Lightroom and DaVinci Resolve. I also tested an older QNAP device that I borrowed and it worked perfectly.

The idea behind the 4-bay setup is to use RAID 5 for better data protection and scalability. I would also use my Crucial X9 as an external backup for the NAS (I’m not using the full 4TB yet so it would be sufficient for now).

However, I’m a bit hesitant because of the cost. With current prices, a 4x4TB setup would cost around $1200. I’m wondering if that’s overkill for a non-professional use case especially since I’m currently the only user.

My second idea would be to use the Crucial X9 as my main storage and buy a reliable macOS software (any recommendations?) to perform incremental backups to a second, larger external drive. This option would be significantly cheaper (around $300–$400). However, I have a few concerns:

  • Would it be as reliable as a NAS in terms of data safety?
  • Are there good tools that can handle incremental backups between two external drives?
  • And more importantly, would this put a heavy load on the Mac (essentially making it do the job of a NAS) during backup operations?

Thanks in advance for your advice 🙂
