I’m setting up a 2-person video podcast in my basement and I’m trying to figure out the smartest lighting setup for a really space-constrained room.
The main issue is the ceilings are LOW, around 6ft-ish... so traditional softboxes feel kind of brutal. They eat floor space, can’t really get enough height/angle, and I’m worried the setup will just feel cramped on camera.
Current ideas I’m considering:
- One large lantern/orb light centered slightly in front/centered between the two speakers to softly light both speakers at once. The light would probably sit overtop the middle camera that captures both speakers.
- Thin overhead LED panels or one big rectangular velcro-mounted directly to the ceiling to save space.
- Some kind of large custom diffusion/scrim setup (like a full soft wall/sheet) to create one giant soft source instead of individual lights
- Maybe bounced lighting instead of direct lighting?
The vibe I’m going for is cinematic/cozy/professional - not “YouTube gamer,” but also not super corporate. Think softer contrast, flattering skin tones, natural falloff, etc. The background will probably be a velvet curtain, or painted backdrop I made for portraits years ago.
Right now I shoot a Apurture 300 into a sheet and it looks decent, but doesn't light both speakers super evenly and... it doesn't look very professional lol.
A few constraints:
- Very limited floor space
- Ceiling height is the biggest issue
- Ideally want the setup to feel permanent/minimal once installed
- Need lighting that works well for video, not just audio podcast clips
- Prefer avoiding giant C-stands/light stands everywhere
Has anyone here solved a similar low-ceiling studio problem?
Would love:
- Photos of your setups
- Creative/custom mounting ideas
- Specific light recommendations
- Whether lanterns are actually worth it
- Whether overhead panels create ugly shadows
- Any “I wish I did this instead” advice
I feel like there’s probably a smarter solution than just shoving softboxes into the room lol.
Thanks for any ideas/recommendations!
