Are AI skin analysis tools actually built for all

I came across this methodology page from an AI skincare app, and the part that stood out to me was the discussion around how dermatology AI and skincare datasets often underrepresent deeper skin tones.

It talks about Fitzpatrick I–VI, the Monk Skin Tone scale, and how things like PIH, PIE, melasma, redness, and vascular signs can show up differently across skin tones — especially melanated skin. I thought that was interesting because a lot of skincare tech seems to treat “skin analysis” like one universal thing, when the data behind it clearly isn’t universal.

The page is here if anyone wants to read it:

I’m curious what people here think. Have you used skincare apps or AI tools that felt noticeably worse for deeper skin tones? Or do you think this kind of “tone-aware” methodology is actually meaningful, vs just marketing language?

Not looking for medical advice — more interested in the tech/data bias side of skincare.
