Greetings folks,

I'd appreciate your help to make up my mind.

I am Kindle user since 12 years, I own a a Paperwhite 2 (6th gen) and a 5 (11th gen). I bought a decent amount of books over the years in the Kindle store, but when last year Amazon blocked the possibility to download the ebooks you bought through them, I started acquiring books from other sources. Which then brought in the problem that sync stopped working between the two devices, as for the sync to work, you must send the book through the "Send to Kindle App" (which I don't want to use, I prefer Calibre).

This meant that Kindle 2 is basically never used, but I would like to leave it bedside and easily pick up what I was reading from the Kindle 5. On top of this, the limitations that Amazon will impose on older devices will make the Kindle 2 even less relevant.

So, I started thinking about jailbreaking both devices, installing KOReader and so on. My main concern is that all the extra steps you have to do to make it work and avoid unwanted firmware updates: they don't look complicated at all, but I have the impression they require some "maintenance", so to say. Like, if I have to add a new book, I imagine I should first remove the dummy file that avoid the Kindle to download new firmware, add the book(s), recreate a dummy file and upload it on the device again. I really don't want this kind of hassle.

The alternative would be to get a new e-reader (I like the idea of something Android based, where I could also eventually install other apps) and forget about the Kindles.

The points I have against this option:

- It has cost, especially if I would choose a model with a color screen (does it make sense?)

- It would mean to "waste" two perfectly working devices, it's what annoys me most. I could still sell the Kindle 5, but it was a gift from my wife and I don't really like the idea.

- Although I like the idea of having Android as O.S., I don't like the direction Google is going toward.

Thank you for opinions and ideas
