I know there have been a lot of posts about this before but allow me to join in. This show is absolutely cruel toxic bullshit that teaches kids all the worst possible lessons. I was born in 2002 and grew up watching Disney Channel and Nickelodeon sitcomes and even as a kid kind of disliked how Nickelodeon (Dan Schneider mainly) writing rewarded humiliation and general meanness in contrast to the more sincere emotionally present style of Disney. However, rewatching Victorious today after a few clips on TikTok sparked my nostalgia I realised how downright not okay this show is, as in if I had kids I would forbid them from watching it.
Almost every interaction makes it look like a "how to be a bad person" manual. The most obvious point is Jade is a sociopath in the literal murderous sense but even the other characters constantly humiliate and hurt each other's feelings with every single joke relying on a "look at the alphas bashing the loser"dynamic. Trina's case is probably the most extreme whereby every single person in the show hurtfully bullies her at every chance they get. Then there's Trina and Tori's parental neglect that gets played for laughs. Robby and Cat are also probably the kindest people in the show and are frequently mocked and disrespected by their friends. Not once is there a heartfelt moment where anyone learns anything or smn's feelings get brought up it's like we are watching this group of sociopaths live as these non-human asentimental beings that get together to look cool together and sit at their fancy school and cool spots around downtown LA.
Yes I know its a kids comedy show and its not that deep yada yada but exactly because its a kids show it has a duty not to portray the most horrible morality. Dont get me wrong I dont think all childrens entertainment should be about displaying role models in an unrealistic almost propaganda-y way - kids also deserve to relax after school and watch funny crap. But theres a line between showing only A students who volunteer in homeless shelters every evening to not glorifying sociopathic evil behaviour to an age group thats still building their personality and lacks critical thinking. A child watching this show could very easily learn that emotional and physical neglect from their parents is normal (and therefore not seek help), that bullying people who are quirkier or less taleneted than you makes you cool and worthy, that hurtful actions don't have consequences, that empathy and kindness get you nowhere...
Edit bc people get weird about this: This IS not a slight towards the actors playing the show who are but enacting a script written by a person we now know is equally disgusting irl. Everyone in the show is incredibly talented and saying things like Jade is a sociopath isnt in any way transposing those traits to Elizabeth.
