My 8 year old dog was diagnosed with Ehrlichiosis after vomiting blood and bloody diarrhea was it okay that the X-ray wasn’t done?
My dog tested positive for Ehrlichiosis after a terrifying night need advice
My 8 year old dog suddenly became very sick last night. She was vomiting repeatedly, had dark red/bloody diarrhea (at one point almost pure blood), and was breathing heavily. It was one of the scariest nights of my life because we live around 3 hours away from the nearest vet.
We finally got her to the vet this morning. At first they planned to do an X-ray because they wanted to rule out a foreign object or blockage, but after blood testing they found out she was positive for Ehrlichiosis. Her white blood cell count was high and the vet said the disease likely explains the bleeding symptoms.
They decided not to continue with the X-ray after the findings and instead started treatment with medications including liver support meds, iron, and Tranex. They also told us to come back after 14 days for another blood test.
The vet said she still seemed strong despite everything, her gums were reddish/pink during the exam, and she didn’t have a fever. She’s home now resting, drinking water, breathing a bit fast, but not very interested in food yet.
