Watajoy trunk retailed by A. Davis & Co (200 Piccadilly)
Picked up this piece recently from a charity shop.
It is a Watajoy 'Featherweight' trunk, likely from the late 1930s, with an internal retailer label from A. Davis & Co., 200 Piccadilly, London, featuring a Royal Warrant.
The hardware includes original Cheney No. 25 locks and the Watajoy brass plate, with the interior still retaining the original moiré-lined trays and hanging rail.
It was listed in the charity shop as a Ralph Lauren trunk (perhaps incorrectly?) which led me to think it may have been sourced my RL at a much later date (founded 1967), and used as a display piece since it ties in with their Americana theme, and little league connection that can be seen throughout some of their clothing. Currently, this is just a theory.
Had previously posted on r/whatsthisworth before getting into the case itself, which got bogged down with users claiming it is a reproduction, and it was never really solved. Now that I have additional photos of the interior, and the retailer label context, it is clear that the trunk itself is indeed original, just customised at a later date. Would be grateful if anyone could provide any further information. Thanks.
