Moving to Columbia with spouse and young children in a few months, looking to rent downtown while we get established and look for a place to buy. How bad is train noise in the downtown areas near the tracks? I read online that it can be quite loud even overnight, but also that the city was making plans to limit how frequently they need to sound their horns while crossing streets. The landlord of a house we are interested in (that happens to be directly behind the tracks) suggested noise was minimal since the ordinance was implemented. However, I haven’t seen any updates about this since the initial proposals were published online in 2024. Trying to figure out if this landlord is just telling me what I want to hear or if there have been real improvements in train noice recently.
