3 weeks in Greece in July- are there lesser known isles/cities you recommend for nature/bicycle/history enthusiast?
This July, I will be traveling alone around Greece for 3 weeks and I want to get your opinion on which isles or cities to visit. I know it's peak season but it's the only time I can go. I don't like crowds or tourist attractions. I don't party or go clubbing. I like waking up early, walking, biking, hiking, history, wine, food, architecture, bridges, nature, and roadway design specifically for pedestrians and cyclists. I'm a transportation planner so I enjoy visiting old city ruins and learning about how people live in cities and process their waste. I really like the local experience, not a touristy one. I like traveling on a budget and opt for hostels, sleeping in a rental car, or with an airbnb host over a fancy hotel.
I plan to go to Crete to Knossos Palace, hiking the Samaria Gorge, doing wine tasting, and going snorkeling at a beach.
Is it worth going to Santorini and Mykonos? I would be interested in going to the ruins and wine tasting. I heard that each island has its own water desalination facility so I'm wondering if I can visit a desalination plant or their waste processing facility or contact their transportation office to hear what walkway/bikeway projects they're doing.
I should add I'm from Hawaii which is a small chain of islands where we have a volcano, beaches, and beautiful sunsets (and lots of tourists!)
Are there any other lesser known isles/cities that you'd recommend for me?
