I want to avoid paying two registration fees.
I live in WI, purchasing a car in another state (top candidates are VA, AL, or NV) financed by a WI credit union, and will be moving to CA roughly two weeks after sale of the car. I do not have a CA address yet - I will have one in ~2 weeks.
The most straightforward route is to have the IL dealer register the car at my current address in WI and pay WI sales tax. Then, when I move to CA, register in CA and pay the difference in Cali and WI sales tax as a use fee.
I would like to avoid paying for a 300 WI registration that I will use for less than 30 days.
In an ideal world, I can get some kind of temporary permit that would allow me to transport the car over the course of 25 days from IL to CA. However, I do not know if my lender would be willing to wait until then to register the car in CA. I have also encountered dealers say they are obligated to register the car at the time of purchase if the car is financed.
What are my options?
