Mockup on improving UX for note switching interface/workflow
Here is my response to your recent call to the community about points of friction while using the device.
Along with that, I also included a suggestion on how to enter split view for the upcoming Dual Notes you presented here.
Feature: Notes
The Friction: Too many taps to switch back and forth between multiple Notes.
Current number of taps (best case / worst case) to switch while inside a notebook:
for recent: tap name of notebook -> tap folder icon -> (if dropdown is not already on recent) tap dropdown menu -> tap Recent Notes -> tap note [3/5]
for searching: tap name of notebook -> tap folder icon -> (if dropdown is not already on local notes) tap dropdown menu -> tap Local Notes -> tap hamburger menu -> tap search -> tap note [5/7]
Your Suggestion:
- Revamp the current note switching workflow (similar to Supernote's "quick access" or StarNote [video in comments])
- Having multiple (preferably up to 5 but at least 2) notes simultaneously open/active to quickly switch back and forth (2 have been confirmed but a few more would be even better)
New number of taps (best case / worst case) to switch while inside a notebook:
for recent: tap name of notebook -> (if list is not already on Recent) tap Recent icon -> tap note [2/3]
for searching: tap name of notebook -> (if list is not already on Search) tap Search icon -> tap note [2/3]
The idea is to access most notes more quickly by bringing a smaller overview directly inside the note without jumping to a new window.
But if you want to browse for a notebook inside the separate fullscreen overview window, that's still possible; the folder icon is still there and requires the same two taps as before.
The only action where the tap count is increased is renaming the notebook. The rename icon is moved to the three dots "more" menu, which is one additional tap. But I imagined that renaming is not an often-recurring action.
The new category list of pinned notes should not be confused with the existing favorited notes (starred). Pinned notes would be something like MDO, your ToDo list or any other important note you rely on multiple times a day. They will have their fixed place on the pinned list. The order of the pinned list is not affected by the name of the note or which was recently opened. The order is custom and can be ordered by move up/move down button.
Additionally, it is possible to activate the upcoming Dual Note split screen feature through the "More" button in any list.
Let me know if you have additional ideas for further improvements or any concerns with this UI/UX concept.
