I run a lunchtime board game club in a school in the UK and today while teaching a different table had a bunch of year 9s play Cockroach Poker while only half-knowing the rules.
The group had taken the route of the current player just drawing the top card from the deck and trying to pass it on to another player and I'm not going to lie, it was actually a pretty elegant variant. They weren't passing and the turn order was a little chaotic to say the least, but it simplified some bits of the gameplay and they collectively decided they preferred playing it "wrong" after I showed them the official rules.
Any other votes for when "playing it wrong" turned out to be the actually best way to play?
