Perdido Street Station Cover Redesign

My first attempt at designing a book cover, a redesign of Perdido Street Station by China Miéville.
I wanted to keep it feeling “publish-ready” while leaning into the book’s surreal atmosphere with an 80s paperback cover feel. Feedback appreciated.

After / Before. Spent a bit of time thinking about the intention of the scene and decided he looked like he needed to be bracing / pushing against the weight, with some advice from Red_Icnivar, Weth11, and Leighabbr I’ve tried a new pose, changing the size and placement of the legs. Let me know if you notice anything off.

I’m actually decently far into rendering and I realised the pose of my ‘human’ character looks weirdly static, it started as a very basic sketch based on some very wonky anatomy so I couldn’t really tell up to this point, anyone know how I could rectify this? Just say it as you see it

The Magnosaltater mandibuliform or Skipper, perhaps even Rapteroo among less serious colonists, is a mid-sized saltatory predator observed across open basalt plains and fractured funglands. Standing roughly 8.5 feet beak to tail at full extension, it presents a menacing dense build, with a pronounced dorsal mass that appears to function as connective tissue for its tail which allows the hind legs a shoulder like anatomy with a wide range of motion.

Its Feeding structures seem to be highly specialised, even among the planets nectarivores and prehensile tongues, with mandibular extensions evolving from 2 pairs of limbs playing roles in both manipulation of food and rapid subdual of prey

Though mostly unavoidable when crossing arid regions, field notes consistently emphasise avoidance of elevated rocky corridors where these organisms are most frequently encountered. Movement through such terrain is considered high-risk for both personnel and beasts of burden, as the species exploits elevation and fractured sightlines to ambush with minimal warning quickly disabling pack creatures
