Is this bike worth trying?

I'm going to try to lowball.

It’s got a decent amount of modifications made by the seller and I wanted to ask if you guys think a heavily modded bike is likely to give me buyers remorse. It‘s got a lot of what I’m looking for in terms of frame and shape, my main concern is the internal gear shifter and the bar end grip shifters, what are the pros and cons of their presence? I’m not super experienced with biking so Im not knowledgeable on what these mods really do to the bike.

I’m looking for a bike to ride for fun and maybe the occasional commute, but my main concern is finding a bike that feels smooth and is decently fast. I also live in an area with semi frequent hills and inclines, does the IGH make it harder to go uphill? Will it significantly reduce speed? Anything else I should check when I try it out?

I got really excited about biking last year and got a vintage MTB but it ended up being too small, and it also wasn't super fun to ride. I recently rode my friend's bike that he built from lots of parts, it was amazing. It reminded me that there is a reality where I can enjoy biking, I just need to actually like my bike.

Anyway, I don't really know what to look for. I am a student in Tucson AZ so we have really shitty rough roads covered in potholes. I just want a bike that can handle rough roads but still go fast and feel like I'm "gliding", something that actually feels good to ride. My friend said his was basically a gravel bike but those are pretty expensive and I am not trying to get a super nice bike that will get stolen on campus. My fear about mountain bikes is that I feel super clunky and drag behind my friends whenever I ride one. While I am a student and I would use my bike for commuting, my main focus is more for fun so I don't want something super crappy

I've been looking on FB marketplace but it's honestly so confusing. What makes a bike good or bad. I also don't know my size but my friend recommended 56-58cm for me as I'm 6'1" which narrows things down even more. I'm down to put some work into a bike I get to make it fit my needs better, but I don't think I have the time or budget to build a bike from the frame up.

What type of bike should I look for? Mountain, road, gravel, hybrid, touring, etc. it all gets so confusing. Is there an approach I can take to get the best of both worlds I'm looking for, like for example a road bike with clearance to add thicker tires?

sorry if this is a lot of confusing/uneducated questions.

Know close to nothing about bikes currently. I got this vintage MTB for cheap 2 years ago but never rode it because tbh the shop didn't fit me well and it's too small. I'm interested in either building/modding a bike so that it actually fits me and is fun to ride, and so hopefully I'll be more motivated to actually ride it. I was looking at some parts on this bike to see if maybe I could salvage them to use for my future bike. I was watching a yt video where a guy said beartrap pedals are good, what do you guys think would it be worth it keeping these?
