I’m a first-time mom, with a 7-month-old baby girl. I’m currently visiting my mom’s house for a few days.
Today something happened that really upset me. I was preparing my baby’s bottle in another room, and my mom was holding her. I suddenly heard her say “come with mommy” to my baby. She quickly corrected herself, but I felt really uncomfortable and honestly a bit angry.
After feeding my baby, I told my mom (firmly but not aggressively) that I didn’t like that and I don’t want her to say things like that again. She apologized and said it was a mistake.
I also took the chance to mention other things that have been bothering me, like:
- During my pregnancy she used to touch my belly and say “this baby is mine too”
- She often calls my baby “my girl”
- When introducing her to others, she sometimes says “my baby” instead of “my granddaughter”
She says she means it in a loving way, but it makes me uncomfortable and a bit stressed.
Now she seems more quiet and withdrawn, and I’m wondering if I was too harsh.
Am I overreacting? Or was I right to set that boundary?
