I’m trying to improve my media setup and I have a question about Jellyfin/Kodi.

From Kodi, I’m used to being able to search for movies and TV shows through add-ons and play them directly as online streams. However, I really like Jellyfin’s interface, library structure, metadata, posters, seasons, sorting, and multi-device access.

What I would like to achieve is something like this:

• Jellyfin as the central interface for movies and TV shows
• content should be streamed online if possible
• I don’t want to store every file locally on my server first
• clean library view with posters, seasons, metadata, etc.
• access from TV, phone, browser, and maybe other clients

I understand that Jellyfin is mainly designed for personal media libraries where the files are stored locally, on a NAS, or on a server. That’s why I’m asking:

Is there any reasonable and legal way to set up Jellyfin, Kodi, or a similar solution so that content can be streamed online without having every movie or episode stored locally as a file?

I’ve heard about a few possible approaches, but I’m not sure what actually works well:

• Jellyfin + Kodi as a frontend
• Jellyfin .strm files
• M3U/IPTV in Jellyfin
• rclone/cloud storage mounted as a media source
• Plex Discover / JustWatch as alternatives
• Kodi as the main interface with the Jellyfin add-on

Has anyone built a setup like this, or can explain what is technically possible and what is not really practical?

I’m not trying to hack Jellyfin into something unstable. I’m looking for a clean solution where I can browse, organize, and play movies/TV shows comfortably in one interface.

ich möchte mein Medien-Setup etwas besser organisieren und hätte eine Frage zu Jellyfin/Kodi.

Aktuell kenne ich von Kodi, dass man Filme und Serien über Addons suchen und direkt online abspielen kann. Bei Jellyfin gefällt mir aber die Oberfläche, die Sortierung mit Filmen/Serien, Cover, Staffeln, Metadaten usw.

Mein Wunsch wäre ungefähr:

• Jellyfin als zentrale Oberfläche für Filme und Serien
• Inhalte sollen möglichst online gestreamt werden
• ich möchte nicht jede Datei vorher lokal auf dem Server speichern müssen
• schöne Sortierung wie bei einer normalen Medienbibliothek
• idealerweise Zugriff über TV, Handy und Browser

Mir ist klar, dass Jellyfin hauptsächlich für eigene Medien gedacht ist, die lokal oder auf einem NAS/Server liegen. Deshalb meine Frage:

Gibt es eine sinnvolle legale Lösung, um Jellyfin oder eine ähnliche Software so einzurichten, dass Inhalte online gestreamt werden können, ohne dass alles als Datei lokal vorhanden sein muss?

Mir geht es nicht darum, Jellyfin kaputtzubasteln, sondern um eine saubere Lösung mit einer Oberfläche, in der ich Filme/Serien komfortabel finde, sortiere und abspiele.
