Do you find this to be too much?

Finally got my Jellyfin back the way I had it before I had to start over from drive failure on a different drive. My question is asked because I haven’t found a good way to get to movies fast enough if in a browsing to find something to watch. So what I did was I created a script that takes your Jellyfin metadata and creates a file compiled of all you movies with the genres they go in categories then a second script that makes hard copies of the shortcuts that get generated in each genre folder. From there in Jellyfin I have a category for each genre but also one for the physical locations to all movies. The issue I came across by doing this is yes it solves the problem of narrowing everything down by genre but in turn creates a whole new problem.

By doing this Jellyfin then detects the same movie multiple times due to the hard shortcuts. So what that ultimately means is Jellyfin includes each one of those as a separate movie which means it creates more than one listing in the search results. Also when scanning media it essentially counts it as a separate movie making your actual movie count inaccurate. For example 2000 movies then become 6,000-8,000 due to miscounting. To fix the first issue you can merge versions but by doing so it shows multiple on the same movies listing making it hard for users to find different versions of the movie as it can be buried under a list of the same movies listing making same quality (duplication glitch). My question is do I deal with what I have now and keep it separated and just don’t use search or do I get rid of categories and make it harder to find stuff just browsing way and better search?

Edit: Yes I have used collections in the past and yes that helps cut down the list of movies but creates even more menus to get to the movie I want to watch if it has sequels. I know this looks weird but the main reason I did it this way is because primary viewing is on a smart tv so having the tiles does make it more manageable. Also on some devices random shuffling is missing under movies so getting a movie at random is not possible so to narrow down everything I have the tiles. The reason being is because even if I could pull up the menu and sort that way it’s again buried behind menus and takes to long whereas a tile is right there.

What are some hard drives you recommend for long term (raid 5 supported)?

In recent years I have collected and ripped a lot of TV shows and Movies. I know I should take backups of everything as well as leave some overhead for Jellyfin itself. My big question is as I build a NAS later on for a home movie theater what are some drive options out there that are affordable, durable, and don’t die after a couple of uses/years. My oldest drive is 5 years old with roughly 45,000 life hours on it (WD Black 4TB) and I feel it’s necessary for me to upgrade soon. With the context to not only expand my current 13TB of storage for more than what I have now I want support for raid 5 setup and also have extra space for new upcoming titles/shows and space for home photos and video instead of paying for cloud storage monthly. What are some of your picks?

I built an auto-downloader and tagger for YouTube playlists because Premium prices are getting out of hand.

I built a lightweight tool to automate my music collection. It’s perfect if you want to keep your media server updated without manual work.

Features:

• Playlist Sync: Monitors your YouTube playlist for new videos.

• Auto Download: Downloads audio as MP3 automatically.

• Auto Tagging: Fetches and tags metadata (Artist, Album, Cover Art)

Best/ your solution to adding discover content/ seerr integration

Hey all, I’m moving from Plex to Jellyfin and loving it so far.

I’m keen to see how people are handling Seerr + content discovery. My goal is a clean setup where users can browse trending/popular stuff and request it easily, whether it’s already on the server or not.

So far I’ve tried Jelly Enhanced, Home Sections, and Jellnext. Each does part of what I want, but not all together. For example:

Seerr + Home Sections works well

Jellynext content starts mixing into my “New on Server” rows, which I don’t want

It’s functional, just not clean.

What I’m aiming for:

A dedicated “Discover” area (home + tab/folder)

Shows trending/popular movies & TV

Clearly indicates what’s on-server vs requestable

Seamless request flow via Seerr

Would love to see how others have solved this or if there’s a better approach I’m missing.

Side note: if anyone has actually got Dwarfs Hammer working properly… please save me 😅 Tried a few times and no luck.

Cheers, keen to keep building this out!

High memory usage Jellyfin

Anyone noticed that their Jellyfin setup leaks memory and bogs the system? I have it running from the official docker image with Docker desktop on Ubuntu. Previous version seemed fine, since the last image update I get the ram maxed out almost every 24h

Any ideas?

Jellyfin for soundtracks and VA albums/collections

With Jellyfin requiring the structure Artist>Album, I was wondering how will it or its users deal with something like soundtracks that are collections of various artists and artist music collections that are not a specific album (call it a mixtape if you want :D).

For the thing with the "mixtape", I could of course rip them apart and order them in incomplete albums but are there other options that will handle them on a file level instead of an album level or am I able to make a folder like "custom album" or "other music of that artist"?

Some questions on top:

How does Jellyfin handle metadata for music/audio files? Is it read only, can it write at all or do I have to update externally? Am I able to rescan the library/selected folders after metadata is updated externally. Can I set where it will get the metadata from first (file vs external provider)?

How are collections or playlists stored? Just as database or also as m3u?

PS: Yes, I know of the existence of other music servers and I will look into them. But right now I'm eager to learn how far Jellyfin can be pushed when it comes to (custom) music libraries :)

Missing episodes' images

Not all TV shows are missing episodes images. I could not figure out what could causing Jellyfin to not grab the episodes images. I checked the TMDB and each episode in question has images. I would expect Jellyfin to grab them.

I have the TVDB and TMDB plugins and active. Any idea why some shows are missing the episode images?

Is there a way to add a served directory of html to Jellyfin?

Is there a way to add a directory for html that could be added to Jellyfin?

My thinking is instead of having a separate server running to just use Jellyfin to serve limited content. My particular use case is adding a simple backend for emulatorjs (I have an old chromebook currently running lighttpd). I could see adding a simple info doc or external links as uses too. I'm leaving cgi options out as that would seem to be more complex (I may be wrong...though imagine Wordpress or something as an option) and I understand something like rom emulation in various Jellyfin clients is not practical. I mostly use Jellyfin via browser.

Simple example: A directory ./somewhere/userwww/index.html that jellyfin serves and would function as a typical server directory. This includes any dir such as ./somewhere/userwww/img/background.png that the index file would use.

Just curious. Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Is there a plugin for Movie + Show collection mixing?

I only care about anime, so I don't need extra support outside of that. Some animes are setup in a format like:
Movie 1 | Season 1 | Season 2 | Movie 2 | Season 3
And I want to know if there is a plugin that can auto-create collections like that for me?

is there a plug in that lets you swipe through shorts of the stuff you have in your library to get you to decide what to watch next?

My little brother mentioned he'd like it if he was able to do that like on netflix so he can decide what to watch next

Weird playback bug on firefox.

When playing shows on firefox most episodes start a couple seconds in and rewinding doesn't work. Not all episodes/shows/movies are affected. It happens to hevc 8/10bit and h264 content. It doesn't happen on any other browser, android or the windows app and I only recently noticed it. It happens with direct play and transcoding on two different pcs on both windows 10 and 11. Updating jellyfin didn't help.

Stream stuttering during transcoding

Does anyone else have issues with transcoding and streaming… some of my media streams need to be transcoded via my other users devices as they won’t direct play on their devices. I have a RTX 5070 GPU.. it’s definitely added to the container as I see activity when transcoding. Network is good 200mbps.. any ideas on what I can do to fix the stuttering? I’ve tried throttling transcoding but that doesn’t seem to do anything I can see the transcoding happing via the dashboard in jellyfins webUI as it has an orange indicator. once it completes the transcoding (orange bar) of the whole

Looking for help suggestions

Hi All,

After so much trial and error finally managed to integrate Google login to Jellyfin via SSO plugin and Authentik. However the setup fails when user is signing in via Android client as Google is blocking the access via Embedded view/browser. Any workaround or alternative?

Could need some help for a proper setup (Jellyfin and other services)

Hi,

I am planning to setup a Linux server for Jellyfin and some other services like Immich for photos and paperless for my documents.

For Jellyfin I would like to share with family and friends, so about 10 to 15 People. 4K would be nice tho not all have one. Would a Mini PC with a NAS storage be a good solution in regards to power consumption and system effiency? Any specific recommendations would be great and helpful, thanks.

Can I put some NAS in if I need more storage at some point? Or should I plan with a system which already can handle alot of storage.

I also plan do save Backups of computers, phones and important photos and Videos of family events thats why I am unsure about the storage especially with Jellyfin on top.

current data from Backups and family stuff would be somewhere at 12 TB sitting on different external HDD.

I assume I would need something like Tailscale for secure access for my family, too?

Maybe some of you can share their Setups with me and what else to consider?

Should I run Proxmox with Docker or what else can you suggest?

If further information are required from my side, I can provide if necesarry.

Sorry for inproper grammar or spelling, english is not my mother language.

Many thanks in advance!

Random shuffle of full catalog

Tried looking for it but can’t find exactly what I want. Is there a plug-in that allows complete random shuffle of your entire catalog of both movies and TV show shows.

Is there a way to have my homepage media in the same format as the dashboard?

Is there a way to make them all stay on one page like how it shows in the dashboard so you don't have to scroll to the right?

Transcoding Issue?

I'm running Jellyfin in Docker (via yams.media's automatic setup). One day I started seeing a few shows have issues with playing. On this one specifically it will run on Streamyfin but not on the iOS Jellyfin app, the Web app, or the Samsung app. I've ensured my user has access to /lib/jellyfin-ffmpeg and that didn't' change the result. Below is the error from my most recent log. Any ideas? Please be very specific if you can - I'm not tech illiterate, but I was only able set it up thanks to the amazing project over at yams.

Chromecast Dongle Alternative??

Hey everyone, I am looking to replace my Chromecast Dongles. I want a device that allows me to use Jellyfin, Streamyfin, YouTube and other apps on my phone and cast directly from those apps to the dongle device. I don't want to use apps on the actual device such as how the smart TV casting sometimes works. And it must be compatible with IOS and Android.
I am confused about the functionality of casting devices these days, so any suggestion is appreciated.
Cheers

Inconsistent transcoding

Can anyone suggest some ideas as to why an unchanged file, no settings changed, randomly transcoded the first time I played it - but then re-muxed and supported Dolby vision etc the 2nd time I played it?

Windows 11 latest jellyfin. Intel quicsync on a n100.
