Review: A thousand splendid suns
I just finished reading "the thousand splendid suns" Not gonna lie, I was tear struck When aziza was sent to the orphanage. I also realized how ignorant I was to the situation in Afghanistan. Thinking back, mariam never experienced love, she only got to experience it when laila started talking to her. All this started because she gifted aziza the clothes she stitched. One thirst at midnight, one small interaction with aziza was the reason she got to experience love in her life.
It hurts to think how oppressed she was that she didn't even consider leaving with laila, she wanted to sacrifice herself, she didn't even consider the possibility of leading a normal peaceful life because she never got to experience that.
What if she allowed jalil into her house in 1982? What if she longed for his love? what is she read his letter? Mariam sabotaged herself by isolating herself, wouldn't blame her, but I wish that was not normalized for her. What if mariam spoke to fariba and other women whenever she went to tandoor? She would know how world works, if she had a better social life in her childhood, she would've been naturally inclined to socialize and maybe she would've lead a better life. Again, result of living in an isolated house in the outskirts of herat.
Mariam killed rasheed because she wanted to protect laila, what if she did it before? To protect herself? If she did it before the war, she could've left kabul, worked somewhere else and earned a living. But she didn't. she never valued herself enough to protect herself. She always looked at herself as a harami, non-deserving, her mom's upbringing.
