Hi everyone! Ben here

New to the community, but I’ve been a fan of Dell computers ever since my old xp dimension days when I was a kid. Recently, however, I’ve run into a bit of a snag with one of my current projects.

I’ve made a promise to myself this year that before I start anything new, I’d finish up my several existing projects. One of which being a 2005 Dell CPS M170. A colossal 5lb+ laptop that screams early 00’s high performance.

I had bought it on a whim several years back in unopened condition off Mercari, and when it finally arrived I was less then happy with the results. Several pieces around the hinges had cracked and fallen off, most of the plastic near the palm rest is starting to lose its color, and the outter lid is very badly scratched. All of which I can look past if it just worked, which it didn’t.

Now it did turn on for a little to display there was some sort of administrative password on it. Either bios or HDD, but it didn’t stay on long enough for me to be able to make it out. It’s been sitting since 2021, and I decided to finally take a crack at it.

I had taken it to a repair shop, which promptly turned me away, so I started diagnosing myself. I had almost given up when I discovered impact computers. I ordered a brand new housing and a new motherboard for it, and then I got a refund and an email saying that they no longer actually had the parts in stock.

I put the machine back together and discovered that the charger I was using was severely underpowered. I plugged in a different unit with the correct amps, still nothing. I’m losing hope on what to do. Does it not turn on without a working battery? Idk anymore.

Anyone versed in this sort of thing, hmu. Impart your knowledge onto me. I’d be grateful so such an awesome computer doesn’t end up as ewaste
